Hello from Montreal, Quebec

Post by oysterboy »

Hello !

After many months of distro-hopping, I have finally settled on Linux Mint 10 (Gnome) for the past month. What can I say - it's beautiful and it "just works"! I also installed Isadora (LXDE) on my wife's laptop. An LTS version is exactly what she needs : stable and no surprises!

Other distributions I have used in the past months / years : Debian, Fedora, Trisquel, Ubuntu, and especially openSUSE as my main OS for the past two years. openSUSE was my real introduction to Linux after many years of using Apple computers and Mac OS 7/8/9/X.

From a philosophical point of view, I appreciate what the guys from Trisquel GNU/Linux are trying to do, and will keep following their progress. From a practical point of view, I believe Mint is just unbeatable from a usability standpoint for a home desktop. I also avoid proprietary software when a free alternative is available, but am not willing to give up on functionalities (such as Skype, 3D acceleration...) when no free alternative exists . Since those two schools of thought (Trisquel/Mint) are completely opposed, you can see that I am very conflicted to the point of schizophrenia  . Oh well...

Looking forward to participating to the very interesting discussions on this forum!
