LM 10 Xfce - installed, but no sound

Postby ddalley on Sat Apr 09, 2011 5:39 pm

The volume meter moves, so something works, but there is no audio output.
There doesn't seem to be a relevant topic for LM 10 Xfce about this problem.

I think this motherboard has an Intel chip, if that means anything.

Any ideas?

Might not be relevant ...

But which xfce packages did you install ? Think you need 2, xfce meta and xfce goodies. If you didn't install both, maybe one of the things taken care of in the goodies package is sound integration ?

Update: Seems people are saying that xfce 2.8 is still pretty new and perhaps has some bugs that haven't been ironed out yet. Which version did you install ? Might help someone more experienced to help you work out the issues. Good luck ...

I presume you mean "xfce4", for the meta package; the goodies package was obvious.
Neither one was installed.

After installation of both packages, nothing changed, but then I still need to reboot the PC.

Update after reboot: good call - it resolved the no sound issue.
(I wish I knew what fixed it!)

Thanks!

Here are some bugs I found and how to fix them.
I'll update the list with more when I have time.

Search in thunar not working:
Install catfish

Volume keys not working:
Install xfce4-volumed

This install broke down in an odd way, so I reformatted the partition and reinstalled.

Installed xfce4-goodies and xfce4-volumed.

The ALSA volume meter moves, but still no sound.

Has anyone found an answer to this. I just installed LM 10 XFCE on compaq Q62 laptop without any sound. Have a realtek sound card. It works for ubuntu, fedora but not this OS. Tried other forum answers even some debian based ones without any luck.

How are you trying to change the volume? By hovering over the sound icon and turning the mouse scroll wheel? Or by left clicking on the sound icon and adjusting the slider?

If when you left-click on the sound icon the window that opens does not show any sliders, then add the "Master" volume slider to it, then close it out.

Then right click on the sound icon,
Click "Properties",
Under "Sound card", click on the drop down arrow, click on the other mixer if there is another option shown.
Click on the drop down arrow again and select the original mixer. (We're just trying to reset the mixer, not change it, that's why we are going back to the original)
Close the mixer plugin window.
Try the scroll wheel over the sound icon now.

Not sure if this is the same problem I had but try this :

Menu : Multimedia : Mixer

In soundcard choose Playback Pulse audio mixer. Add a master volume control if it's not there already and check if the sound isn't muted (speaker icon with a red cross). When I installed it was mute by default but I could still configure the volume bars (but of course no sound :P ).

I never made Linux Mint 10 Xfce.
The latest release is a Debian Edition that clem made and it's version is 201104.
Have you opened up the Mixer app and set it up there?
Not sure why the pusle audio settings app is installed as Xfce doesn't even use it.

hey thanks for this mate I've been trying to find a way to adjust the volume from the taskbar and never thought of the scroll wheel! I'm a recent convert from Gnome Ubuntu and am just getting the hang of this :)

Thanks, merlwiz79!

I just installed Xfce-debian and had no sound. The mixer was set to OSS and when I chose the Playback/PulseAudio mixer, it was muted. I unmuted it and got sound. Whew!

Now I will have to check any other Xfce install that I have for the same things.
