Extremely long boot time

Post by blacksilva »

I have extremely long boot times. it takes about a minute to boot. I am running LMDE with the default environment, Gnome. My dad, who runs Debian with KDE, who has done absolutely no mods to make it any faster boots 25 seconds faster than i do. Something has to be wrong right? Or does it really take that long for some odd reason. Does anyone else have a really long boot time?

Thanks ahead of time

Not exactly the solution to your problem, but found some stuff that might help. Being a natural born tweaker who cannot resist the idea of playing with something to try to make it faster or better. More than a few times managing to break stuff and wishing I'd just left it alone, lol.

You could use a lighter weight GUI/desktop ( don't know which desktop LMDE comes with by default ) ... I use xfce due to lower resource requirements. Plus just like it more than gnome and it sped things up for this old box. Also came across a linux utility ... bum. A start up manager that allows you to get rid of services you don't need that startup automatically. It also resulted in some decent speed gains overall.

Though people caution using it without taking the time to make sure you only disable services your OS doesn't need. I got rid of stuff I knew was safe to nix, like bluetooth and a couple others. Also not 100% sure if bum works with your version of Mint. Though don't see why it wouldn't. Maybe one of the linux old hands will pipe up and clarify the point.

fluxbox was even lighter on resources than xfce. But didn't like it in terms of ease of navigation. Sure it would give you a performance boost too. One of the things about linux that's really growing on me. Can have as many desktops as you want. And switching between them is simple. Log out, choose the desktop you want ... log back in. SWEET ...

thanks a lot mintnewb. i know i can disable the bluetooth service, because i dont have bt, but am complety confused with most of the rest. will have to try and do some research.

thanks again.

disabled the bluetooth services and made no difference. but with such a small change i doubt it would.

The specs you have for the comp you're using are a beast. I'm surprised it isn't blazing along as is. Puts my computer to shame. Was just hoping bum would help you lighten the load. Less services starting at startup has to mean faster boot up. I mean that's a logical assumption to make.

Sure there's plenty of other tweaks you can make. The whole lighter desktop thing made a real difference for me. But this things only got 512mb's. System like yours would think it'd already be quick, quick.

yeah thats what i thought. I have enough power to boot anything I want to boot but it just takes forever with LMDE. When i had regular old mint, based off Ubutnu 10.10, I could boot it up fully, with 145 different mods and themes, it booted at a consistent 33 seconds. For that time to double is just odd to me. I thought it might be Debian but when Debian KDE boots 25 seconds faster their has to be something wrong.

Not surprisingly I'm stumped. Thought LMDE was supposed to be lighter and faster than the regular main edition of Mint. Just went for the low hanging ... obvious fruit, like a startup manager. Come across plenty of suggested speed tweaks trying to figure out how to get my own OS faster.

Not sure if I trust the sources for the info though. Probably safer to stick to this place. Some of the experienced Mint users obviously know their stuff here. As mentioned, got me scratching my head.

Ummmm, do you have it set to login automatically and set to no 10 sec delay etc ? I mean if you're the only user for the OS ? < More low hanging fruit. About the best I can think to offer. Maybe the rolling release is going through growing pains or summin and will straighten itself out.

Agree with you though ... summin doesn't sound quite right there. Though could drive yourself crazy and/or crap out your OS install trying to figure out exactly what. Did you install anything to it recently ? Done anything radical since installing it ?

Sheesh, could be anything ... Drivers not playing nice with a hardware component, etc, etc, etc. Tell ya what, this old comp fires right up in like 40 secs. I might be persuaded to trade ya even up. ;)

Have no tried any real software mods to make it faster because everyone has said its a good chance it will just blow up my operating system. And when i say 50 seconds i mean booting from grub. when i press enter on my keyboard is when i press go on my stop watch. And i stop the clock when i log in and start it back up after i press login.

And i have not installed anything weird. Only simple things list chrome, docky, ailurus, and a couple other things. the 'weirdest' would have to be ailurus.

Maybe its just some weird bug that only i have lol.

@ blacksilva , sorry to butt in, but after a fresh reboot have you looked at, and found any errors in your dmesg log file ?

If you want you can copy and post it (paste it inside a Code display button) here for assistance.

(just type dmesg in the terminal, hit enter . . or you may already have the Log File viewer in your menu.)

Only 35 seconds showing . . not bad . . but wow ! gaming mice, wireless mice, trackballs, keyboards, etc. lots of input devices . . thats okay, not showing any problems.

1) Take that floppy disk out of the slot - it's giving an error too ! - Timestamp 3.8 to 15.2
2) Your motherboard needs a BIOS update/upgrade, check the manufacturers support website for the latest.

Code: Select all

[ 23.643067] [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: No compatible ACPI _PSS objects found.
[ 23.643068] [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: Try again with latest BIOS.
3) Anything connected to that parallel port ? It's searching for something.

yeah lol. i have my g500 hooked up with 2 other mice. usually only have the g500 and the other trackball mouse, but need the third one today lol. just one wireless keyboard and that should be all for input devices. I dont even have a floopy, thought i disabled it. Will check out the mother board update, and am not quite sure what a parallel port is.

thanks for looking over the file for me.

That powernowd needs to go, I have spent 3 months dealing/trying/guessing fixes for my long boot times, system freezes, stalls and jittery app loads, after almost pulling all of my hair out and booting my tower to the moon, i finally did some research on the powernowd, if you look closely it actually says 'powernowd 2003-2008' here we are in 2011, processor and MOBO capabilities have had great leaps in advancements and from what ive found the actual code hasnt been updated in 2 years, so after looking through all my demsg's and boot errors i finally uninstalled powernowd for cpudyn and low and behold no powernowd errors, havent had a freeze or other related problem in over a week and i feel it is truly solved. I also believe that alot of the posts in these forums is directly related to this powernowd, especially if any oc'ing has taken place at all.

Now on the comment people see about using the latest bios I can debunk this as i still had that message even tho i ran the gauntlet with ASRocks bios pool for my mobos, from 1.01 thru 1.85 still had the error in 2 different units and in the end with cpydyn replacing porernowd all has been right as rain

not quite sure what a powernowd is either. can you give me more information about that?

Re: Extremely long boot time

from synaptic

control cpu speed and voltage using 2.6 kernel interface

This package controls CPU speed by using the sysfs interface to the CPUFreq
driver in v2.6 Linux kernels. It does not depend on APM or ACPI,
and it doesn't try to do anything other than control the CPU.

If supported, CPU speed is controlled entirely by the kernel, using
the built in ondemand governor. The userspace daemon powernowd will only be
used as a fallback.

The name is somewhat misleading, as any CPUfreq capable processor will work,
not just those from AMD. However, it works better on CPUs that support more
than two speed steps, like those with AMD's PowerNow! or Intel's Pentium M
series.

The powernowd daemon is less complicated than cpufreqd or cpudyn, at the
cost of absolutely depending on a 2.6 kernel with the userspace governor
and sysfs support enabled.

Canonical does not provide updates for powernowd. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community.

IMO it pretty much defunct as most kernels run fine without it

Just wanted to thank richyrich for cluing the mint newbs like myself in on that command and that it'll help us to diagnose problems. Of course I hadn't known that. But then at this point guess you could write what I truly know about this OS on a postage stamp. :D

blacksilva ... I'm out of my league of course. Just wanted to thank the others for sharing some good tips. WIsh ya luck, but even at 50 secs ... not like it's exactly eternity, lol. Though get what you're saying, Im the same way.

I'll screw around with something until every bit of whatever can be tweaked. Usually breaking it several times and having to spend tons of time repairing it. Wishing I'd just left well enough alone. Oooooo I can make my web browsers load time .092 secs faster if I change this !!!

Back on topic ... good luck getting that OS install up to snuff.

(edit) Would think to really tweak it you'll have to start messing around with the kernel and other stuff. Which agree ( cause it's common sense ) for someone unfamiliar with linux. It's not more likely you'll screw up your OS ... it'd be guaranteed. Did an experiment, from grub screen to loaded with a browser open on Mint 10 main ed w xfce. It's about the same as what you're getting.

50 secs is not a long time to wait really. lol ... Could always just leave the comp running and set to hibernate or in suspended. If you want instantly up and running in 5secs. Assuming you're the sole user for that box. Which sounds like you aren't, shrugs. Just a newb, but of course agree. Messing with the kernel is strictly for folks who know what they're doing. Or for newbs like me, who want to spend hours reinstalling and retweaking what they've got. :D

Thanks a lot guys. Really appreciate all the help you all have offered up. think i might just leave it alone as i dont know all the much about what im doing with kernels and other things. would rather just wait a couple extra seconds than hours fixing, which i have done before and its not fun lol.

Thanks again.

Thank you very much for that, and for including your personal experience with it. This helps me with an AsRock that I was going to give up on.

@ blacksilva , you can do a quicksearch in Synaptic Package Manager for powernowd, once found, click and mark for removal, cpudyn will show up in that search too, remove it too if it is installed. Once applied, and removed, a quick reboot will tell you if it has helped you or not.

Did you find anything that could be causing that floppy error ?

Re: Extremely long boot time

Ok rich, I'm gunna try that. Maybe it will make it boot faster. Never had speed or stability problems. And yeah. I booted into my bios and sure enough it was not disabled. I do not have a floppy drive but it was searching for one. It made a huge difference. Swear I had it disabled. But anyways, it's booting quick enough that I would never tell a speed difference from Linux Mint 10. Once I uninstall them packages it may be booting even faster who knows?

Thanks for all the help guys. In time I will learn what you have learned and will be helping noobs like me lol.
