The fan running on high speed problem seems to have gone away (keeping my fingers crossed...lol) and the touchpad was still a bit erratic at times, so i re-installed it in the package manager this morning and it seems to be ok now...otherwise the new kernel seems to be working fine even though i have AMD on my laptop....So, i guess i can stay with it...

'd like to connect to the above and ask if anyone know how a kernel upgrade will affect people that have nvidia card installed through sgfxi?
- At first my simple mind thought - "Ok, run the updates, step out of the GUI, run sgfxi again and then reboot and try the new kernel..."
But it can't be that easy can it?

Thing is gosa, you have made your life more complicated by electing to use sgfxi (whatever that is? ) to install nvidia drivers in the first place, when they install perfectly well in LMDE without any external help whatsoever.

All I can tell you is that as an 'uncomplicated' LMDE/nvidia user everything works fine for me both before and after the install.

I am sure you have an absolutely brilliant reason for using sgfxi, but you must realise that like different kernels and different apt sources, LMDE is not tested to comply with your particular self imposed situation and therefore it is unlikely that any regular user will be able to answer your question.

Before you say things about sgfxi scripts I suggest you go to the smxi site and read the history of the scripts you will then discover H20 wrote the scripts for Sidux users and they were used by all. sadly the higher arky of Sidux wanted to keep the distro as unfriendly as possible and H20, left them to fight with them selves. the rest is history the scripts are for all Debian varieties. The scripts give a safe way to upgrade the debian system and advice when not to, and they make short work of all drivers using the debian way or the nvidia way or any other way nvidia/ATI.

If you're using ATI, the Catalyst 11.3 driver doesn't play nice with 2.6.38; neither the liquorix nor debian flavor work properly with ATI proprietary video on this box. However, on an older PC with an older ATI card, the radeon driver is happy with it. If you really need to use 2.6.38 for some reason, that may work for you as well.

Nope. fglrx does not work with 2.6.38. Im holding back the kernel upgrade for now. ATI is usually a bit behind to get the drivers work with newer kernels. Sad but true.

I have a nother problem, my / partition is 10gb big, and now i have the message that i onley have around 400mb les?
Any one else have the same problem ??

The 2.6.38 update initially knocked out my wifi (rt2870ste.) Had rt2800usb, rt2800lib, rt2x00usb & rt2x00lib all blacklisted to prevent clash with last kernel. But when doing 'lsmod | grep rt2' got nothing? Un-blacklisted the whole lot & hot plugged. Wifi is now working but signal has dropped to 90% & speed loss?? Still no rt2870ste driver only rt2800/rt2x00. Tried to reinstall 'firmware-ralink' via Synaptic (then with aptitude) no joy...
Can anyone offer any insight or info.

Hi everyone,

My time problem solved, thanks. But I have had 3 freeze outs at login now - the power button the only apparent option.

My machine is Toshiba Tecra with built in Intel audio & graphics (915), I don't install any proprietary drivers or anything.

After my nfs problem last week, I pinned nfs-common, but reading tjweavers post about the change from portmap to rpcbind, I decided to unpin it. It has installed fine & is working now but I noticed during the boot process that something is returning an error when it looks for

/var/run/rpcbind/[something]

Sorry I'm not sure which log to look for that in.

Something which may be off topic (apologies) but in scrolling though the logs - I understand little but am curious - I noticed that some of them have today's events as taking place on Thursday 12th April, rather than Tuesday which it is. Bit weird.

I always needed the rt2860sta driver and always had problems getting it to work with 2.6.32. Now, the new kernel supports my wifi without tweaking. But I just checked and rt2860sta is not loaded But I have no problem with the connection despite this.

Did you apply any of these changes. If so I'm wondering if any of theses steps need to be undone. The main reason i'm thinking of this is that I didn't actually apply any of these fixes. I just downgraded my nfs packages and waited for updates to hit the repo and everything has been working fine for me since the new updates came down.

@tjw Thanks mate, I didn't do anything like that, I actually used MU! (Tempted to go back to sudo && tho).

It is actually working, I just noticed some new strange messages which I've searched for but can't find in the logs.

I have been updating my LMDE thro Mint Update to level 3 only with no problems until this week. After the recent update my machine froze after the grub menu. The common theme seemed to be Libata.

I have since restored back to my backup of the 19th March. Today I decided to bite the bullit and allow all levels of update which has resulted in strange desktop effects, part of the screen refreshes when running an app and some stays as the original desktop. I am using the system to post this thro empathy but the top line of the page showing the file, edit, view options is dark grey and a system message showing a network error which displays on the desktop and still be seen top right.

I think in my reply post I mentioned that the only step I did was step e. -- however if as you say everything has been working for you since the new updates came down, then don't fuss with it!

I think I can narrow the source of this a bit more. My Mint fortunes was working prior to making any updates today. Having read this thread and noting some problems various people were having, I began making updates piecemeal using MU. First I did the MU update. Closed MU from the Notification area and restarted it from MintMenu. Then did Mint-x-theme and Mint-system updates from MU. I next removed Openshot and openshot-docs using Synaptic, followed with reinstalling the new versions of the same two packages.

I now am having the same terminal message regarding line 35

Yes, using Archive Manager to look at the components of mintsystem_7l7l5_ii386.deb I see that there is a mint-fortune component located at /usr/bin/mint-fortune of the archive.

When I then go to open the mint-fortune in my installed system, which properties shows as accessed and modified today, lines 33-37 are
