Mint 10 startup/shutdown problem

Postby rustyboy on Wed Apr 13, 2011 7:19 am

Having used Mint from a live CD for a while (and having installed Mint 8 way back when), I downloaded the Mint LMDE XFCE 10 RC and installed it. All went well except for a few glitches (had to apt-get NTP so time would sync, video player complains about dir not found each use from within TB). The big problem I have though. is when I choose to startup or restart. Sometimes, not every time, a cold start gives me a half a screen full of text (not the usual stuff I see) before a hang, forcing a hard reset.

Likewise, a reset starts the process and gets to a certain point before freezing with a line like "restarting kernel" (or something like that). A straightforward shutdown is fine.

Having installed the RC, I assume my release is fine as I have done all the updates. Is this so?

Anyone got any ideas where I should start? I read the user guide to no avail. I searched known problems but found nothing there either.

Thanks,
R.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Can you post any other info from the text output before it hangs, such as any error messages or just anything that might be a hint. Might also post your basic system specs.

Rustyboy, I also am experiencing problems with the restart on a IBM Thinkcenter E50(M/t:9215-A1U). The shutdown works fine but the restart hangs just at the end after a Restarting System line appears. I am running Ubuntu 10_04 as a duel boot option on the GRUB boot loader. I have read a few things to try but nothing seem to work. Ideas were: Perform a warm boot, then cold boot then disable the acpi, reset the BIOS, smp, kbd,efi and pci interfaces. I am running the Main Edition of Julia(Mint 10).
Any help would be appreciated. Chuck
