New Linux User

Postby alberto_chaos on Fri Apr 15, 2011 11:58 am

Hello, first of all, I'm not native English speaker, I've learned it on Internet, so do not think I'm illiterate.
I've recently migrated from windows seven to Linux, I searched around and found Mint the best distro to start.
But I have two reasons to try another distros, first, Mint has shown to be very... windows, in some ways, it take care of me so much, that I have no freedom to smell and taste pure Linux, and that's bad, 'cause I don't wanna waste time, I wanna learn some raw Linux, I've thought about Slackware, but I read some stuff and got scared, I wanna know from you guys, what are the most recommended distros for me to touch Linux in the heart, learn, have some mindbreaking(i don't know if this word exists), but still have easy access to some messenger like pidgin, and a fast browser like chrome, so I can communicate and get help
And second, I'm freak when it goes to try apps out, I can eat 1TB in less than a month
For now, I've though about (now downloading kde64)Fedora, cause RedHat it's such a great name  , and OpenSuse.
Any ramblings (is this the right word?) will be just great. Thanks! :D

You can learn a lot from LMDE and Mint XFCE, they are great rolling distros.

Debian and Arch are both great. You can learn a lot with them.

But still, ubuntu/mint are too babysitters, I'm not criticizing, I'm just saying that the user isn't forced to learn pure Linux stuff, and I want this for a lot of reasons that I've already said, and because I'm a C++ learner, for some months now, and Python newbie lately... you know... I'm just trying to master myself, if what you say is true, so what do you suggest besides learning gtk and/or qt, to really become an Expert/Linux Dev?

I understand, Mint does hold hands with new user.

You can build Debian from a base install to what you desire and it gives you a idea of what it takes to assemble a distro from very nice binaries packages.

With Arch Linux it takes a little more work and with Gentoo you need to compile everything yourself but with LFS and BLFS you have to make everything.

Read about Arch, Gentoo and LFS and decide what's best for you. I like both Debian and Arch and but Gentoo and LFS take to much time.

To became a expert Linux dev it's better to join some linux project, you will learn faster. Mint always needs help but there are others: Fedora, Debian, etc. I'm not a linux dev so I am not really the best person to give you advice on the subject.

Uhmmm, I've finished my Fedora KDE 64 download, I'm gonna test it, then I might try Debian, but from what I've heard, I better use a VM and not risking, right?
Anyway, thanks for the insight in these distros, I'm gonna try them all, but Mint really have a charm, I think I'm gonna keep it as main distro for now. :D

If you want to jump in the deep end first, give Slackware a whirl...lol It is absolutely not for the faint of heart. I have tried a number of distros but I always end up back with Mint. It just works right out of the box and that is what I want and Mint is NOTHING like Windows. My husband got a new computer for work less than 2 weeks ago. it has Windows 7 on it. It has crashed at least 12 times and is now in the shop. I loathe Windoze. I don't care what they do to it, it is still Windoze. Ugh

I was taking a look at Fedora in VirtualBox, and I'm just finishing downloading OpenSuse, just to have a taste of them, than I'll really go further and try a Slack installation and maybe an LFS too. I need to learn how it works from the core, how packages are made, built, and so on. It may be just useless, but it's funny, free, and I'll be able to help the linux community and stop Micro$oft from fooling people, cause yeah z06gal, I kinda hate windows just like you =].

Albert you have just the right attitude to do this. I have broken my system so many times learning what is what and how to do things but that is the only way I know to learn just like in life = trial and error. I haven't gotten brave enough to mess with Slackware yet but I actually ordered a new laptop today so I may use this one for just that. Keep posting here what you are doing and learning. It always helps somebody. ;)
