Mint 11 upgrade feature

Postby tatsujin79 on Wed Mar 16, 2011 2:08 am

Just kinda curious and i didn't see this in the forums already. Does anyone know if katya will have the same type of "upgrade from cd" feature that ubuntu has in 11.4? I tried it on natty alpha 3 and it was ok, but 3 out of the 6 times i tried it (different machines) it failed. Nice feature tho and was just curious, thanks

The Mint devs strongly discourage upgrades between releases (even though it's simple enough to edit your sources.list to point to the new release's repos and run a dist-upgrade...I don't see the point of having an upgrade from CD option, really), so I doubt there will be any sort of official upgrade feature. Anyone who wants to upgrade to Mint 11 will be pointed to this tutorial on the Community website:

I understand its discouraged and like i said i was just curious. I upgraded from 9 - 10 earlier today by adjusting my sources.list so i'ts not an issue for me at all, just you know, wondering. But i guess its not likely taking the stance on upgrading. Thanks

If you go LMDE,, then you will automatically get newer versions of Mint, including whatever new features Mint 11 brings forth...It comes to you....no re-install or upgrading that might break your system, necessary... :)

I was running lmde originally before going to Arch. As I said its not an issue for me i always just do an apt style upgrade anyhow.

this is from the "get Ubuntu 11.04 beta" page:

To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2, type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes), and press Enter. Update Manager will open up and display the message, "New distribution release '11.04' is available." Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

does anyone know if this will be possible with Mint from 10 to 11 too?

ciao.

No, because Mint uses its own branded mintUpdate tool, not Ubuntu's update-manager. If you want to do an in-place upgrade to Mint 11, just modify your sources.list to point to katya/natty repositories and run a dist-upgrade.

OK, this is what I've done before. I didn't know that the ubuntu method was so different.
Thanks for answering, have a nice day.

Ubuntu's method is the same (it uses APT as well), but they provide a graphical interface to manage the dist-upgrade.

I am having alot of trouble with MINT 11 viewtopic.php?f=46&t=73612

Maybe I should try an upgrade from the sources list?
