Desktop problems after update

Post by mikblyth »

After I have updated my system, I now have a problem where I can only use half of the desktop and the desktop has moved on the right hand of the screen.

I have dropped back to my original mint ubuntu nine system and dont have this problem.

so all I can think of is that I must have a faulty driver somewhere, but how would I go trying to find the problem.

One question I have. Does this "dual screen" look happen as soon as you start up or does it only occur after you have used it for a bit?

As to what you can do about it well we would have to know what it is you have updated recently. I had a look through my update history and the last time I had any graphics updates was about a week ago, but perhaps you haven't updated since then.

Open synaptic go to file/history and look through the listed updates for anything relating to graphics (so if you have an intel card you look for something with intel in the name etc etc) Copy the list into the thread if you are not sure what might be relevant.

The only thing I can really think about is that I installed Java, then un-installed it, there was a couple of other programs I also uninstalled , but these were only gwibber and webhtrack.
Initially when the desktop loads it looks fine, but as soon as I load ANYTHING, it then goes into the split desktop, but you cannot do anything on the lhs of the screen, but when I am running the likes of this browser, the browser is full screen and works with no problems. I have disabled all the fancy animations and it helps in so much I dont get all strange artefacts on the screen.

I have a nvidia card and it seems to be installed okay and it is current and up to date. I havent seen a recent update for the card.

I am running Julia
cheers

I un-installed the Nvidia drivers and had exactly the same issue.
so I re installed them again, doing a reboot between each step.
The "Duel Screen" seems to happen immediately before the start button appears

here is info on my start up log, this is the last part of the start up.

Could it be hardware related?

The reason I ask is that I had a problem with image corruption on a second monitor just recently (nowhere near as bad as yours though). After a lot of investigations I replaced the cable linking my laptop to the external monitor (it was 5 years old). Since then the problem has not returned (fingers crossed :) ).

Thanks, but its a laptop and everything else I open up looks fine,
I can browse, look at my email, use office programs and everything look and acts as normal.

I also have mint 9 on my system so dropped back to that (I always have 2 op systems, the other for a back up) and I absolutely dont have a problem with that, so I think we can rule out any hardware.
