Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
HI,
I recently installed LMDE on a laptop with the following specs:
Acer Aspire 5920G-302G16MN
with
Intel Centrino Duo T7300 2,0GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, NVidia GeForce 8600M-GT
and the current distribution.
After installation the problems started when updateing over package sources list.
I guess.
Now, when I start the laptop, it sometimes happens, that after I can see the grub and dont do anything, it prints out a screen with a lot of values and just stops there.
Also, when I hit the enter button in the grub, to NOT wait until the 5 seconds are over, it starts the print out on screen and stops everything.
It stops at the line, where it is written, that the kernel is loaded now.
It also often just goes through startup correctly.
It is happening 50:50 of the time.
I always have to shut down the pc with the button, and start all over again.
What can this be?
What I tried is a checkdisk and it sas no faults.
Thanks in advance.
Bye.
Cheers.

You installed a bad package during one of those updates. Figuring out which, I'm not even gonna touch. But at least this almost certain cause of your problems will give you something to work with.
The magic minty search bar awaits you fellow mint newb. Or one of the lmde experienced folks might help ya to diagnose your problem child update and jettison it.

Do You think a picture of the screen would help?
Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Yes, if possible a picture and the Mint version you are using will help.
How many options do you have on the Grub2 menu? Is there another kernel?

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Hi,
I have made this picture with my cam during the moment, where the system halts and stays "freezed".
When this happens after Grub, nothing goes, until I restart.
My distribution is the current one, linuxmint-debian-201101-gnome-dvd-i386.
I have two option on GRUB, normal and recovery mode.
Here goes the picture:

Can you boot with "acpi=off" bootoption? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Hi,
sorry, I didnt have the time so far, to test what You asked for, with the installation dvd.
I think I can try out tomorrow.

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Hi, sorry, I cant even enter the help menus.
Option menus.
When entering the boot dvd, then I can press f5 or f6 where ever I want nothing hppens.
Maybe this is due to a linux mint debian?
The f6 options you showed me under that help.ubuntu.com link are for Ubuntu or derviates of it.
But LMDE isn an Ubuntu derivate, right?
So.
I guess this will end in a new installation.
Cheers.
Andre

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Some boot options will work for both:
http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/i38 ... 02.html.en
http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/i38 ... 03.html.en
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html
Just press "Tab" to add a bootoption to a start option in the Grub2 menu.

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Hi,
so that would mean, that I can add over the "tab" changing something like this?
4.6 The `pci=noacpi' Argument
This disables the use of ACPI routing information during the PCI configuration stages.
just add to the end of the boot parameter
and then it doesnt start with ACPI running?

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
When you boot you can edit the grub menu by pressing the "Tab" key. Then you have access to the string that starts the kernel and you can pass some kernel options.
It can be helpful when an existing installation will not boot. Try acpi=off, nomodeset, etc.
If it works then you edit the file /etc/default/grub to make it permanent.

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
I am sorry, but I dont know how to enter acpi=off, because I cant type the "=", it just doesnt give me the sign in the whole keyboard.
And further more, I am not sure where to type it, when I would be able to type a =
When I enter the GRUB over the tab, there are several lines of the kind of start dev/sda1 and kernel verson.
And then I woul dwrite the acpi=off as next line there.
But how will I have the = ?
I just tried like this: acpi off.
But didnt work.
Cheers.

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
When you boot, your keyboard is not set so you have to use as the US keyboard, just press every key until it writes a "=". With my PT keyboard it's between the zero (0) key and the backspace key.
I write the bootoptions in the line with the "linux vmlinux........"

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Hi,
I have the same problem, bat only periodically, when Grub boote the LMDE. It appear the same picture as by webass. When I restart the system, the Grub works perfekt.
I have five OS on hdd: Home Vista, Linuxmint 8, Linuxmint 9, Linuxmint 10 and LMDE. LMDE is the last OS installed. Vista and all the Mints works fine. Only this LMDE grub freeze appeared periodically
My Laptop is Inspiron 1525, Core duo, 3GB ram, 160HDD, videochip GMX3100.
This periodically Grub freeze is the same with the the problems writes before?
Please one answer.
Thanks, Peter

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
Since you have other linux OS on your PC you may want to use the Grub2 from Mint 10 to avoid that problem.

Re: Problems on Startup with GRUB or Kernel
I have been having the same problems as WEBASS, for the past few months, under LMDE version 10, updated daily. This only seems to happen with the 32 bit version, on my Acer Aspire 9410-2079, which is set up with GRUB to boot LMDE or Windows 7. I have the same LMDE version 10 on my DELL desktop 64 bit Optiplex 745, but don't have the same prob with that. The Dell used to have Windows XP on it, but the Windows got clobbered, and I've not yet bothered to restore it.
Now, interestingly, when it keeps stalling like that, and nothing else gets past that, I can reboot, and before it gets to the image WEBASS photoed, if I press CTRL-D a few times, I can get a full bootup. Most times. Sometimes, it stops and asks me to press CTRL-D or login to maintenance mode. I just press CTRL-D and press on to a normal session.
I may be wrong, but could this mean it's something in the Kernel? Especially when, after some updates, if I forget to press CTRL-D, it does a normal bootup anyway?
Is there some command line program to do, or something to run, to capture all bootup texts to screen, so they could be submitted to get a handle on this?
