Linux Mint Xfce (201104) Bug Fixes(Updated July 6th)

Post by merlwiz79 »

I didn't get to test the Debian Xfce releases in time to get these fixed.
Here are some bugs I found and how to fix them.
I'll update the list with more when I have time.

Search in thunar not working:
Install catfish

Volume keys not working:
Install xfce4-volumed

Notifications are the ugly default theme:
Change theme to slider
For all users:
Open Root Terminal and run this command:

Code: Select all

gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults --type string --set /apps/notification-daemon/theme slider
Missing Xfce4 mintDesktop:
Download and open with Gedbi Package Installer.
http://www.4shared.com/file/LQopvC78/mi ... 4_all.html
Mirror: http://ompldr.org/vOGVuOQ/mintdesktop-x ... 04_all.deb
Compiz SETTINGS DO NOT WORK.(How to here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 04#p413404)

Fonts Looks bad:
Menu --> Settings --> Appearance --> Fonts.
Make sure anti-aliasing is enabled, hinting is set to slight and sub-pixel order is set to RGB.
Menu --> System --> Xfce mintDesktop
Select the System Tweaks tab and then Click the Enable/Disable button next to LCD System Fonts.
Log out and log back in.

Remove Grey Border around desktop icons text:
Menu --> System --> Xfce mintDesktop
Select the System Tweaks tab and then click the Enable/Disable button next to Use white for the font color.

Doesn't reboot the computer after updates:
Caused by debian-installer getting installed.
Remove these packages:
apt remove --purge debian-installer debian-installer-launcher kexec-tools live-tools live-config live-config-sysvinit

Menu gets messed up after updates:
Download and extract the menu I have made below.
Then right click on the menu and select Properties.
Now select Use Custom File and use the file downloaded.
xfce-applications.menu.tar.gz
There are others but I have other stuff to do and will post them later.

Thanks for these. :P

I have applied these . . . no problems.

When you say this, are you referring to volume keys on the keyboard? If so (I'm not in front of my LMDE machine to test it), thank you for preemptively solving my problem before I posted a thread about it.

Yep, he's reffering to the (Fn) volume keys on the keyboard. By installing xfce4-volumed we can get them to work.

Now let's see if that with the notification will work out for me. :D

Hello, I've just tried your fixes. After installing the mintdesktop, the log out menu doesn't work anymore, and the icons for update manager and network connections don't show up automatically in the right panel. Any idea how to fix that ?

Xfce mintDesktop doesn't mess with any of those items.
Did you use Gedbi Package Manager to install it?
Maybe an update broke something.

Thanks for the reply... I've followed your instructions for the notifications fix and the mintdesktop. I've used gedbi for mintdesktop. I think my problems come from that since I haven't really changed anything apart from those fixes. After some googling I understand the nm-applet and update manager should show up in the notification area. When I try to add it in the panel, the system warns me it's already running on the screen and a warning : "could not open systray module".
Anyway I don't really mind not seeing those notifications but the logout in the menu is a pain since I need to reboot/shutdown from terminal now. I'm gonna try and look for the menu configuration files and see what's messed up. I might reinstall linux if nothing else works.
First time linux user so everything is a bit new and difficult to fix. But this XFCE edition does look neat and I'm considering using linux mint exclusively once I get a better PC (right now still dual booting with XP on a 10 years old PC).

Edit: I installed xfce-session manager via synaptic and everything is now back to normal :D , both notifications and logout. No idea why this package was uninstalled tho...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... d2a8fd7485
2) Extract

Code: Select all

cabextract -F ppviewer.cab PowerPointViewer.exe

3) Create a font folder

Code: Select all

sudo mkdir /usr/share/fonts/office2007
4) Extract fonts there

Code: Select all

sudo cabextract -F '*.TT?' -d /usr/share/fonts/office2007 ppviewer.cab
5) Reload fonts cache

Code: Select all

fc-cache -fv
Spellcheck support in LibreOffice:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install hunspell-[your language abrev.]
, ie, french: sudo apt-get install hunspell-fr

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libreoffice-l10n-[your language abrev.]
, ie, french: sudo apt-get install libreoffice-l10n-fr

Automount Partitions in Thunar:

Just use disk manager rather than manually edit /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install disk-manager

Code: Select all

gksu disk-manager
To make your hard drive access a little bit faster add the

Hope this helps.

The best/proper way to do that is make a new file called 99-synaptics.conf.
It'll get used instead of the default and won't get overwritten with updates.
