Another xfce question re images [SOLVED] *thanks*

Postby daveinuk on Fri Apr 29, 2011 7:10 pm

Just copied 16 jpegs from my xp machine to a usb stick, plugged it into my laptop with the newly installed xfce and it wouldn't open any of the images? unplugged/unmounted and re-inserted, the folder with the images disappears!
unplugs/ re-inserts, all the other files in the folder have a lock on them and won't open?

Took the stick upstairs, plugs into my xp machine, the folder won't open/read/delete with the warning that the file is corrupted. . . . . . . .. made a new folder, added all 16 images again and the exact same scenario above just happened all over again . . . . .
folders gone, files are locked with a padlock. . . . . I'm really lost with this now it makes no sense at all lol . . . . .

Just wondering... What's the format of the usb ? Is it exFat by chance ? AFAIK Linux doesn't support this format (yet) so this might explain your troubles. If it's fat32/ntfs then I'm not sure. Do you have another machine with windows on which you can test if it's readable ? Maybe try formatting it under linux ?

More questions, did you dismount the USB before unplugging it, mount it when you plugged it in? What File Manager are you using in Linux?

Thanks for the replies, the stick's formatted to FAT32 and after reading both replies i realised i hadn't actually mounted the pendrive, or that I needed to . . . . . . Mint 10 & ubuntu's always auto mounted and I've just not realised. I guess what i want to achieve after sorting out my partitions in the other thread is being able to have them auto mount at startup or when plugged in, don't have a problem being logged in as root, coming from xp i'm used to it lol

thanks for the replies once again !
