Linux Mint Vesus Linux Mint Debian

Postby newlinuxman5000 on Mon May 02, 2011 4:32 pm

Ok, I see allot of people are cruising on Linux mint Debian. Can someone give me
the run down on what the advantage is on using the Debian version? I know Debian
is a rock solid OS, Probably by far the most stable and predictable in its outcomes.

I'm interested because I may want to place the Debian version on i just want to know
the pros and cons and who is better...."of course this is subjective" but what people
think who are in the field using it and know something about how it operates. I love the
concept of the rolling distracting. Just need a little nudge in the right direction.

Thanks,

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Pros:

Rolling release
Debian base, and so potentially more stable
Sounds geeky when you tell people you are a "debian" user

Cons:

Needs more work to get everything working just right
Use of the terminal is likely to be somewhat greater than in Mint 10
Sounds geeky when you tell people you are a "debian" user.

To be honest, it's much like all things related to choosing a Linux distro and comes down to personal choice and ability. It's a certainty that you need more experience with Linux (or at least the ability to learn and not be as concerned when things break) to use LMDE. On the other hand, LMDE was the first distro that finally pushed Windows into a (rather distant) 2nd place in my usage. If you remain unsure, why not try it first in a VM and see how you get on with it.

LMDE still has a lot of rough edges...updates are constant..where as you might get 300 or so updates in 5 months on Linux Mint main edition...you will probably get at least 300 per WEEK in LMDE...and there are opportunities for breakages of the sort you rarely would get on Main Edition...If you very techie (geeky) and love lots of fixing and tinkering to get things smooth, then LMDE will be perfect for you....

If you want pretty stable and reliable, go with Main Edition...and it is very smooth as well (unlike LMDE)...
LMDE is based on Debian Testing...so it isn't rock steady and always reliable...I used it for a few months and return to Main Edition....though it was an interesting "learning experience" i decided it wasn't for me...I'd rather have smooth, steady and reliable

Also, when installing you must be very good at manually partitioning because LMDE has no auto install options...
Just running it on live dvd won't give you a full picture of what it would be like...because it LOOKS like main edition though some of it's rougher edges will be immediately apparent...

But if you want to run it in a virtual machine, then you would get a better idea (but it will take some time to get the flavor of what it is like)...
Again, i went back to main edition...but many here love it, warts and all

It will NOT be more reliable then the ubuntu based version of Linux Mint, unless you go to debian stable but then it's not really a rolling release anymore so you might as well stay with main edition if you want stable, reliable and less "headaches"...

Thanks guys I downloaded the live CD I think i will install it to a VM just to see how it rolls.
If anything it will help build my linux muscles. Ubuntu/Mint makes you weak after awhile
and i need to spend some more "quality" time in the command line, but I usually these
days don't got without force LOL. I know how to set up everything I need in mins once
i get installed after that I get comfortable and lax. I need to get back into the nuts and bolts ;-)
