Checking at http://packages.linuxmint.com/ the site loads very slowly. Once it did I checked 'Katya' and a load of packages has been uploaded since yesterday. My guess is that Clem and Co are currently doing some heavy uploading of the final packages in preparation for building and testing LM 11 and it's slowed the package server down or it may have even been taken offline while the devs do their work. Often happens when it's near the release of the new Linux Mint main edition.

Of course it probably would have been smart to check the LM blog first, huh?

Xfce users will be pleased to know the update now has xfce 4.8 but there's some bug in the menu as there are item duplication in the menu i.e. 2 entries for log off, 2 entries for about xfce

For some reason my gstreamer issue resolved itself after running apt-get clean and apt-get autoremove. Then apt-get dist-upgrade finally installed the new gstreamer. Can anyone give an explanation of why apt-get clean & autoremove solved this issue?
The instructions suggested Microsoft Vista or better, so I installed Linux.

Exo-utils breaks Xfce4-volstatus-pugin

If you use xfce4-volstatus-plugin (probably not if you use Gnome) it will break if you install the update exo-utils.

For me xfce4-volstatus-plugin is far too important to be broken so I will not update exo-utils until this is fixed.

I don't know if this is any help to the devs of Mint Update but I captured the errors when installing all the updates after a fresh install of LMDE up to the screen form freezing on the last one. Number 11/ were a bit different.
http://lin.me.uk/pics/install-errors.zip
Is there any way to pipe the output to a txt file or is it already logged somewhere?

When you do the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" everything is fine, it's just a bad intro to first time users.

It's so solid/stable running LMDE levels 1-3 that I almost feel tempted to turn 4-5 on just for kicks but I expect I'll stick with my LMDE rolling stable release.

One thing I would ask if Mint is to have its own repos is to put a good version of Xvidcap in as the ones in the Debian and Ubuntu repos are duff and it's a great app.

Oh well, back to work Image

There really needs to be a obvious warning somewhere about not using MintUpdate set at it's default levels 1 thru 3. MintUpdate for all intents and purposes should not even be included in LMDE for in it's current default state it does not work for LMDE. It's only designed to work in Linux Mint main edition which is based on Ubuntu.

That being said, I do not recommend you use MintUpdate for updating LMDE with only levels 1, 2 and 3 enabled as it will not give you a stable rolling release. Eventually it will break your system as it will hold back needed dependencies over time. The recommended way to update LMDE is to use the Synaptic package manager or via terminal using the following commands:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

then

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you really want to use MintUpdate then make sure you enable levels 1 through 5 first. Sure, based on Debian Testing, LMDE might break once in awhile but not that often where if you leave only levels 1 through 3 enabled it's sure to break sooner or later.

Just trying to save you a headache down the road. :D

Oh, about the errors you're seeing updating a fresh install. I've seen the same thing of late in the same situation. LMDE is somewhat overdue for a new respin as the massive amounts of required updates after install is starting to cause problems. The best way to update a fresh install of the current LMDE is to drop out to a command prompt (ctrl+alt+F1) and run the above commands and then "sudo reboot" when the update is finished. A new respin is due sometime after "Katya" (LM 11) is released. They'll probably have MintUpdate squared away by then as well as the overall update process. Like monthly (debugged?) snapshots for example.

@ kmb42vt Thank you for your concern, that's what I like about the Mint forum every ones so helpful and the mods do a great job.
LMDE is somewhat overdue for a new respin as the massive amounts of required updates after install is starting to cause problems.
I tend to disagree as I would think respins take a lot of man hours, I think the target should be to write the software to do netinstalls as Debian have thus saving a lot of man hours in the future and the end user gets an up to date LMDE every install.

I will continue going my own way with the levels and Mint Update as my gut instinct tells me to and I learned to follow my instincts a long time ago. I have no problems with the system going down as all my data is stored on a separate ntfs data partition as I dual boot all my machines.

At least we both agree to disagree.

If peppermint (with a very small dev team lead by Kendal Weaver maintainer of mint lxde and fluxbox) can do re-spin for their fans, I don't see why Linux Mint can't but then again Clem, if I am not mistaken, was the one to plant the ideas of 're-spin' in the mint communit

You could always try the -dbg package and see if it has been moved to there. In any case I think you ought to file a bug with Debian:

I just ran the live dvd and sound recorder opens there so it's one of the level 1-3 updates that's caused it, any idea what updates to look out for if I restore the image backup and rerun the updates?

Code: Select all
You could always try the -dbg package

out of my depth with -dpg in synaptic, there were loads of them but thanks for trying, I'm just a simple soul with just a little knowledge but manuals are beyond me.

Have to think of something new to replace RTFM nowadays as the non academic kids are searching youtube for tutorials.

looks like it's been reported all ready.

So I might try a fresh upgrade and knock off gstreamer0.10

Now I have a real problem, the sound recorder don't work, I just get this error but synaptic don't recognize any of the utils mentioned :( Image

Had the same error. Try installing gstreamer0.10-gconf (0.10.28-3). It worked for me.
