Problems with LMDE

After the disaster of trying to update to Ubuntu 11.04 and the fact I have Mint running fine on a netbook, I decided to go to LMDE and see what running Debian was like....

Downloaded the latest version last night, burned a DVD this morning and installed.

First thing, I went to update manager and found 895 updates. Really !!?? So I click "Install Updates" and get the window "Fix broken packages first." On a New Install !!?? REALLY ???????
Well, I go to Synaptic and click "Fix Broken Packages." Back to update - no help - still broken packages msg.

So I try to do a "Refresh" and it cannot find several things on "packages.linuxmint.com/dists/debian/" - either it doesn't see the item or the item is non-existent.

I thought I was getting away from this crap by leaving Ubuntu.....

When I had this problem I went into the update manager and updated them one level at a time and it works that way.

the issue with fix broken packages occurs because MintUpdate is not designed to LMDE, was a port from the Ubuntu versions of Mint

if you want to update your system properly open a terminal and

if you want to use mint-update in LMDE tick all the five levels of upgrade and everything works fine!

Don't expect LMDE to be better then running ubuntu...you will probably have far less problems with an ubuntu based distro then running LMDE...it gets breakages and you have to be prepared for lots of playing and tinkering...and sometimes breakages take a long time to get fixes for...debian isn't always that fast about bug fixes...You will have a far more stable system with an ubuntu base then debian testing such as in LMDE...

Sorry to sound discouraging but i have done both and i am back to mint main edition now...

I am using Linux for about a year now and Mint Debian editions exclusively from September. I have not faced a real problem yet with my basic installation. Of course, i am upgrading always with the commands mentioned before by zerozero.
Of course, i am trying to be carefull, seeing what is gonna to be upgraded each time and taking notes if i learn something new.

ps: the best choice for anyone counts stability upon everything else, is to download Janaury's LMDE, install it, change the sources to stable and THEN perform an update/upgrade

Yes it's way over the top to have so many updates. It's well past time for a new iso from the Mint team for LMDE. The current iso is still based on Squeeze so you are installing it from when Squeeze was testing, then doing a full upgrade to Wheezy. There is value in getting the December iso (64 bit) if you WANT to base on stable instead of testing, but to have that still the default with such a huge number of updates is something that needs current consideration for updating just to save users from putting so much strain on servers, their own broadband limits (if they have any), etc.

I would recommend just using terminal to update instead of MintUpdate. You can check all 5 levels and be fine, or I believe that to be the case, but using the terminal to update is simple and pulls in all dependencies without issue.

I have no clue on how to fix this update, other than reinstalling. Synaptic also exits with a "E: initscripts: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1" message while trying to fix broken packages...

- one with the update/upgrade itself, and i say this because those v. don't match with my system

- the second one is with vmware, and i already saw that error here (look for the post by lmdeman, his fix might help you)

Awesome, uninstalling VMWare unblocked the update and I could fix the broken packages with apt-get -f install and then apt-get update & apt-get upgrade, basically lmdeman's suggestion.
I have to reinstall vmware though, but I'm pretty sure to recover the state as the disk images and config folder are still at my /home.
