Upgrading Nvidia video card

Post by vinoman »

I have Mint 3.1 running on a Celeron 2.6 ghz with 1256 RAM and a Nvidia geForce2 100/200 card. I plan to switch that card with a Nvidia Geforce FX5200 card. What do I do to get the new card to work? Anything to change before I switch out the cards?

I heard that the GeforceFX5200 is a good value card that can handle Compiz-fusion.

I just added a GeForce 6200LE.
When I booted up I got a bunch of error messages, and had to reconfigure X. I went into recovery mode from Grub and typed:
sudo dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg
I installed the Linux genetic nv driver and was able to bring up mint.

This gives functionality, but to get 3D effects and fully utilize the graphics features, you must install the non-free nVidia drivers. Running Envy should install the correct nVidia driver.

Btw, Newegg has an EVGA GeForce 6200LE 128 MB AGP for $34.99 and the 7200GS 512MB (128 on board) PCI Express x16 for the same price.

"I installed the Linux genetic nv driver and was able to bring up mint."

How did you install this driver?

It was a menu item when reconfiguring X.

Should I be reconfiguring Xorg.conf before I put in the new videocard?

Then I can see something until I run Envy with the new card installed. Is this correct?

I recently changed from a Geforce2 to a Geforce 6200, 256 mb. Everything restarted normally. I ran Envy to update the driver & I've had no problems.
