Nautilus error: Can't open folders?

Post by Lolo Uila »

For some odd reason Nautilus on my Celena system can no longer open folders. When I double-click on a folder Nautilus restarts and leaves an error log in my home folder. Note that I can open the Home icon and other icons on the desktop, but can't go any deeper than that. Also, if I right-click and choose open in new window I can open a folder. Nautilus restarts if I double-click on the folder.

Very strange. My other system running Cassandra is fine. The 2 systems are very similar, except Cassandra is still running the Ubuntu Auto Update, and Celena is using Mint Update with only "safe" level 1-3 updates.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this without a re-load?

Dunno what happened - I would reinstall Nautilus (apt-get or better from Synaptic)

Tried that. Reinstalled and rebooted. Same problem. :(

Ok - a complete removal so you include config files which probably are the culprit here and subsequent install could do it. If not there is a folder in /home called .nautilus with lots of metafiles and saves. Think you can delete them

[sigh] No go...

Purged nautilus and a bunch of other stuff that went with it. Cleared out that hidden .nautilus folder then restarted into recovery mode and reinstalled it all, but I still can't double-click on folders (other than those shown as desktop icons). There are a couple of threads on the Ubuntu forums about this. Apparently it was an issue with some release cadidates for Gutsy, and a few people had this problem with Feisty, but it was supposed to have been fixed with an update.

I've compared version numbers of everything that comes up in a "Nautilus" search in synaptic, and they are identical between my 2 systems. I just don't understand why Cassandra is still working with Ubuntu Auto Updates and Celena broke using only the "safe" Mintupdate 1-3 installs. I even tried doing a full update (including 4-5) to bring it up to the level of my Cassandra system, but it's still broken.

I guess a full reinstall is in order. Sucks that it happened to my Celena system since I don't have a recent backup of it. There really isn't anything very important on it (it's my "play" system) but I had the themes and Beryl tweaked nicely.

Other than updates, the only thing that I have added recently was Wine. I installed Wine and experimented with some simple Windows apps. But I also did that on my Cassandra system as well (and it's still working).

Very odd... :?

Problems like this makes me wonder if I should install some virtualization software and run an instance of Mint in that. I could then destroy that Mint in all kinds of ways

Running one on Mint now?
What would you recommend based on your experimenting experience?
I can do quite a bit of experimenting as I have daily complete backups of my system, but still I don't want to break it...

I actually have a "test" partition that I install stuff on when I'm experimenting (it has Daryna Beta now). I beat up on Celena pretty bad before putting her in the primary boot position and she held up well. That's why this is so puzzling. :?

Anyway... reloading doesn't take all that long, and it's often faster than trying to troubleshoot an unusual problem. This seemed to be one of those situations so I just reinstalled. Everything is running great again.

Okay this sucks big time! Nautilus is broken again! confused?!

And it was something from the Linux Mint software portal that killed it. Everything was working fine, then I installed a bunch of stuff from the software portal and now Nautilus can't open folders again.

:(

Tim I know you know Linux
Check all things nautilus

Code: Select all

sudo updatedb
locate -i nautilus
should give you everything about nautilus.
Are you in Daryna? Don't find the answer easily
There were some updates but nothing I remember that could break Nautilus
