my install is also affected by this bug/feature; metacity --replace brings everything to normal again, well, almost :mrgreen: i loose compiz;
but for that bug report gozer linked this doesn't seem to be a bug, but one of the signs of gtk3 arrival

we have to remember that compiz will disappear in gnome3 and we will see a lot of UI chances;

Anyway, i have a extra feature in my system: i can grab and drop the panel around the screen (cool :lol: ) and this should be related to this chance-over aswell

If Gnome 3 forces me to choose between Gnome OR Compiz, Gnome is going to lose. Forcing Gnome-shell on gnome users is about as idiotic as Ubuntu forcing Unity on its users. Thankfully XFCE works with Compiz, and can be made to look fairly similar to Gnome.

well, i have to rectify 2 things in my last post:

1- Compiz is disappearing from GNOME-SHELL and not gnome 3 as i said above; in fallback mode we can still use it;

2- metacity --replace only works while the terminal is open, as soon as i close it everything turns again to "no controls windows"; guess i have to install emerald :lol:

you can do "metacity --replace &" to keep it going after closing the term. Also, you can add that command to the startup programs so it kicks off when you log in. For some reason on my system no window manager is started by default so I added a command for both compiz and metacity in the startup. Using metacity now that compiz lost its window buttons.

Now for the breakage of the day: the latest kernel build (..39-2) borked my system so I had to roll back to 39-1. Got a bunch of virtualbox errors when booting and the window manager would not start.

2.6.39 liquorix is working fine for me.

The latest breakage i've run into is apt-listbugs prventing libc6 from being upgraded.

Been doing the sid thing for quite some time. I have it on the two LMDE installs I did. No "major" problems just watch the forums as stated and sometimes it's better to hold off a day or two. I have converted several of my aptosid installs to pure sid (removing the aptosid packages) and honestly I can't really tell the difference. I do run the liquorix kernels on all but one machine. (I left the slh kernels on one just to see how things are going there).

Common sense and a little caution will yield you a fast system that just "works", with the latest software.

Or just run "metacity --replace" from the Alt+F2 run dialog instead of the terminal.

It's fine for 32bit systems---If you are running 64bit---DO NOT upgrade--the bug is with libstdc6++ in /lib64--- I'm holding that back & the Metacity until they resolve themselves...My experimental install is also holding libc6--Metacity bug is not affecting Gnome-Shell---just Gnome "Classic"

Well---the GL driver bits for my nvidia blob broke last night for both Experimental & Sid...makes it a bit of a bummer when you need to reboot to play some unreal ;) If it is still broke this evening, I'll post about it......

Not only that, but this just came up:
Code: Select all
grave bugs of libcv2.1 (-> 2.1.0-4) <unfixed>
 #629414 - libcv2.1: opencv requires cmov instruction
Summary:
 libcv2.1(1 bug)

Makes for a interesting weekend..................

Nvidia should be fixed in either yesterdays or todays updates in sid.

Bummer---I tried to revert my Experimental--no dice--so it's limping along with vesa--G-S is out the window for now & I did manage to revert my Sid--it's working in a half-way manner.....so I'm booting into my Mint11 to play GLX games until this blows over.......

May we live in "interesting" times........

Found out the hard way that sid and nvidia is a bad combo! Reinstalled LMDE and am sticking with the testing repos.

My test laptop is still running fine with sid, still boots up with a window manager every time. Much more than I could say for the nvidia box!

Well--It took me this weekend on & off to get the Nvidia drivers to work for both my installs. Experimental took quite a while & Sid was quicker due to not as b0rked & doing the same basic thing as Experimental..Both are back to the 270.41.19-1---needed to revert sources to Testing, do the Nvidia & Mesa downgrades, lock all the downgrades & then re-enable Sid & Sid/Experimental for my respective installs.....

Now I need to wait until the upgrade path is good again........

I noticed grub-common is on apt-listbugs. The bug looks like it only applies to testing though, and I run sid. Any sid users update grub, and if so were there any issues or did it go smoothly?

I remember a grub update a couple of days ago---no problems.

Since we haven't gotten a forum of our own here, I was wondering how many regulars in this thread would be up for doing a monthly podcast. A semi-regular state of the LMDE tinkerers convention via skype or something that could be recorded and archived for download by other mint users, Maybe add some mainstream mint announcements in as well. You know I'm getting bored and need an outlet when I propose a podcast out of existing ones for OS NEws, the Linux Kernel, Debian not updating regularly enough for my liking.
