LM 10 feedback

LM10 64bit Gnome

What needs to be done to make mint better...
- higher resolution grub background, not gray or more appealing grub screen, current ugly gray low res grub background makes it look amateurish
- fix boot warning bug: ( process:467) Glib_WARNING **: getpwid_rcs: failed due to unknow user id(0) - common boot message bug, patch needed to get rid of it in mint
- add boot to CLI option in grub, this is a basic requirement so that user can boot to CLI if needed, Recovery should be a separate option not to mess with ...
- make sure text/notext on boot works, ie verbose boot is not consistent, for some users it works for some it doesn't
- consider replacing alsa sound with something more reliable and better performing: sound dies once in a while, sound processing echo delays etc...
- make hiberation more verbose, at least display %done and have verbose option during hiberate/suspend, otherwise screen goes black and there is no feedback of any sort when going in/out of hibernate/suspend
- or change from swsusp to uswsuspend for hiberation, make sure uswsuspend works well for most users
- mint backup tool: just make SimpleBackup default backup tool, it works well and is reliable, mint backup tool - not sure about whether to trust it or not ...

Otherwise LM10 is a darn great operating system!!!
I think it will eventually take number 1 spot on distrowatch.

Regards.

You *do* realize that Mint is currently up to version 11, right..?

The grey GRUB background has been updated to something different for Mint 11. I'm not sure what resolution is it but I believe GRUB is limited in how high and what resolutions it can even use in the first place anyway. (I'm stuck with 1024x768 as my highest resolution, even though my laptop's resolution is 1366x768, since GRUB doesn't support widescreen resolutions... yet...)

I believe the "bug" you're talking about is just a warning (Says right in there that it's a Glib_WARNING, so...) and as long as it isn't causing your system to perform improperly in any way, it can safely be ignored.

Not sure most normal users will need or want an option in GRUB to boot directly into a CLI, and recovery mode is sort of necessary in some cases where the regular boot option just doesn't work but the OS is still recoverable... Those people that usually need or want to boot into a CLI can set up something like that for their own personal systems, it isn't necessary for the default installation to do that.

I'm not sure what could be better than ALSA, the only other kernel-level sound system I know of is OSS and that's actually obsolete as far as I know (unless your hardware is very old and not supported by ALSA...) The main editions of Mint use PulseAudio but I believe that underneath Pulse is still ALSA talking to the kernel and the hardware... (I could be wrong though.)

I'm not sure too many people are complaining about the current hibernation/suspend setup, except when it doesn't work properly, but that's a different issue. I don't think it's necessary to change that for the handful of users who aren't happy with a non-verbose hibernate/suspend, personally it takes my system maybe 2 or 3 seconds (usually) to suspend and maybe up to 10 or so to hibernate, and I see the disk activity LED flicker while the hibernation process dumps my RAM contents to disk, so...

Not sure what to say about Mint Backup, I don't use it or any other backup software, I just do my backups manually in Nautilus since I have three different drives I use to copy my personal files to...

Hey, that's just my personal feedback... feedbacks could be different for different users.

Sure about version 11.

I'm sure Mint team can much do better than low res gray grub background...

Glib_warning - is a warning, but reported as a bug in Ubuntu, little things like that what shows the face of the OS ...

Boot to CLI option, that would show a little extra care by Mint team... this option is needed to perform routine OS/disk maintenance and partition level backup
it would take just a few lines on code but would provide a useful function for many users...

I think I meant Pulse Audio, not Alsa... this is probably not possible considering Mint relies on Ubuntu...

SWSUSP is really the original older hibernate/suspend method... new methods exist like uswsusp...
Imagine a person coming from WIN7 to Mint ( like most do ) and not seeing any feedback their used to seeing when going into hibernate/suspend
at least put % done on there like it's done in USWSUSP method ( which by the way is not working for me, ie needs more testing )

I tried a lot of backup apps, SimpleBackup save my OS a couple of times... it's pretty easy to use file backup app, and it's pretty fast, compared to the rest of them out there...
If i wanted to do system backup with MintBackuptool would take me hours, I finally gave up on it and rest of them and switched to SimpleBackup, takes about 1-2 hours for about
50Gb file system.

Mint is just a few points away from taking number 1 spot on distrowatch...
Taking care of these little cosmetic extras that require little effort by Mint team but would make Mint #1 and same or better than win7
It's already much better as is compared to win7 but still a little rough looking here and there...
