Canon PIXMA MX870 on Mint Isadora

Postby Likesspace on Sun Jun 19, 2011 6:34 pm

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get the Canon MX870 to work on my dad's computer which is running Mint Isadora.

I'm using this printer as a shared printer on a Windows machine and am trying to get it to work via Samba.

Linux does see the printer as a network printer but when I go to install the drivers the MX870 is not in the printer list. That pretty much stops me from going any farther with the setup.

I've found some drivers on the Canon website and I have installed them on the machine. The only problem is that even after the successful installation the MX870 does not show up in the driver list.

I'm sure I'm missing something that is fairly easy to solve but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This thread, How To: Install Canon PIXMA MX870 drivers on i368 and 64bit ubuntu from the Ubuntu forums may be of help. It starts with Karmic Koala but gets into Lucid Lynx on which LM Isadora is based.

For me to get my Canon Pixma MP620 to work with Isadora I had to install two Canon drivers plus a dummy libcups package to get the driver files to work. The dummy package is libcupsys2_1.3.9-17ubuntu3.9_all.deb Without this libcupsys package it would not work. Post #66 on page 7 of the above Ubuntu how to would indicate that you will need the libcups2 package, the catch is the drivers look for libcupsys2. When you install the dummy package I named above it will redirect the drivers from libcupsys2 to libcups2.
