Linux Mint on HowToForge: Installation Guide

Post by ceti »

The HowToForge web site is famous for their excellent tutorials. Today they dedicated a "Installation Guide" (aka The Perfect Desktop) to Mint 4.0.
Perfect for newbies and then some:

Quick comments on it:

- Just click on the lock icon, no need to run mintUpdate from the menus.
- Synaptic is directly accessible in the left hand-side of mintMenu.
- Picasa is going to be added to the repos tonight so you won't have to go and download it yourself.
- The drivers given by envy are more up to date than with Restricted Managers.. but not as well tested, here's the difference between the two.
- Don't do like the author... actually read what the level 3 updates are before applying them (level 3 means "should be ok")
- You can get MS Fonts as mentioned in the article, but keep in mind that Red-Hat's Liberation Font are already there and give you a free alternative.. so do you really need them? It's up to you to decide.
