Mintdesktop is the same in both XFCE and Gnome. It just shows additional tabs in Gnome, but the terminal one is there in both. Note that if you can't find mintDesktop in the menus, you can run it from the terminal: "mintdesktop".

Sorry Clem, but it doesn't work for me. (But I have the fortunes already :D )
This is what I get:

Code: Select all
sven@lmde-aspire-one ~ $ mintdesktop
/usr/share/themes/Murrina-Blue/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:59: Murrine configuration option "scrollbar_color" is no longer supported and will be ignored.

    self.init_checkbox("/desktop/linuxmint/terminal/show_fortunes", "checkbox_fortunes")

    return client.get_bool(key)
glib.GError: Felaktig inmatning: "bool" förväntades, fick "string" för nyckeln "/desktop/linuxmint/terminal/show_fortunes"

It seems to be some michmatch between "string" and "bool" :roll:

I run Gnome 32-bit.

This is a setting in gconf. You could try to edit the file manually, changing string to bool. The file is located here: ~/.gconf/desktop/linuxmint/terminal/%gconf.xml

If that doesn't work, try renaming or deleting the file.

Yes morgan71, i can see something there, but I don't know how to fix it.

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<gconf>
   <entry name="show_fortunes" mtime="1303043840" type="string">
      <stringvalue>true</stringvalue>
   </entry>
</gconf>

Edit:

I changed the name of the file so the system could not recognize it.. Rebooted and the system created a new file. Now it works!

Tack skall du ha Morgan i "Götet" :D

In fact -I can NOT find any new file in "/home/sven/.gconf/desktop/linuxmint/terminal" at all, BUT it still works... :roll:
Thanks for the help anyway. :D

Now it also starts from the Mint menu!! :lol:

Edit:

Now I have tried to turn forunes OFF, and then ON again. When I did this, a new %gconf.xml file was created!
It looks like this:
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<gconf>
   <entry name="show_fortunes" mtime="1309206387" type="bool" value="true"/>
</gconf>

did a complete re-install and dist-upgrade much to my surprise it borked the terminal

the terminal would just resize to bare minimum of its panel size and if I'd check the version its gnome 3.0.1 when I am in fact running on XFCE debian.

the error will say: failure to execute default terminal emulator input/output error. any help will be appreciated

Just did a dist-upgrade on one of the 64bit systems here, it disconnected the wireless totally wiping it out, but no biggy, just reinstalled the driver and up and going again, just in case anyone was having the same issue you know what to do now.
If you had to install the driver in the first place to get online through wireless just do it again, that's all I did.

for those running xfce mint debian: you can just replace the gnome-terminal with xfce-terminal.

sam: can you please post the log of this last update for future reference, please?

aljoriz: my terminal is also 3.0.1, it's not a bug, it's a feature, gtk3 (and gnome3 and gnome-shell) it's slowly coming to testing, so in the next weeks/months we will see a lot more apps changing from 2.xx to 3.xx

Even on Gnome LMDE, it seems that the updated gnome-terminal V3.0.1 doesn't follow the system theme (colors, fonts, etc.). Does it require a Gnome3 theme configurator (or a bridge to Gconf)? In the meantime you can partially restore its look by tweaking the Profile Prefences from the Edit menu.

tks for pointing this out, yes the theme is broken as eventually will be with other app being ported to gtk3 in the meantime;

this transition is going to be slowly and disruptive :(

Yes. gnome terminal has unique breakages in both xfce (shrinking) and gnome (broken decorations). I fixed both by installing xfce4-terminal.

One way to control the size of the terminal when it opens is to put options into the command line of the launcher. I started doing this months ago becuase the four preset options were not suitable to me and the preferences would not let me set the terminal to the size I wanted.

The command line in my launcher is edited to control size and placement, it looks like
Code: Select all
gnome-terminal --geometry 119x28+0+0

For me the Gnome 3.0.1 terminal works fine. I run LMDE Gnome and made the recent updates via Mint-update with all levels on.
But I have blocked xserver-xorg-core from being updated due to earlier Compiz-problems.

Sorry about that zero
sam: can you please post the log of this last update for future reference, please?

It was a broadcom update from what I seen, I had to download the drivers and build them to get it going in the first place, I still had the drivers in a saved folder and the terminal code to get it going again. This time I just ran the terminal code I had saved and it got it going again.
I notice in the log (if I got the right one , quite a long list) Mint Update.history and I checked the mint system log (hope that is it its in the var/log folder), never check that before, but it had realtek in it and two broadcom ones, one for sta common and one for source.
That one isn't my computer I just keep it updated and keep things running on it, mine is a 32bit one the one I fixed the broadcom on was a 64bit acer
If needed I can dig back into it again and find out where I got everything and what I did if it will help, just haven't done since I first did it, and just left the needed stuff saved in case this happened. Good thing I did :D (not an expert here by no means).
I did the update June 26 if that helps.

Hope this helps in some way.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 22 june 2011

Postby ajar108 on Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:33 am

I am having a peculier problem with LMDE audio. For some reason, only sound in one application works at a time. For example, when i am watching a video in firefox, and start skype. The audio on firefox is gone. Another case is when i am watching a video on firefox, media player or VLC is not able to play the video at all. I tried to reinstall pulse audio, hoping this was the problem. But it hasn't helped. Anyone having a similar problem any suggestions.

Thanks.
