Katya screen resolution issue

Post by Luburru »

I have been experiencing an irritating problem with screen resolution on my Toshiba Satellite C650-13G, running LinuxMint 11 Katya, Gnome 2.32.1, kernel 2.6.38-8-generic. Every time I log in there are two black strips on either side of the screen; the resolution claims to be 1024 x 768 (4:3) under Ecrans (I'm running Mint in French), but refuses to use the full screen. This is especially annoying since I mainly moved to Mint from Ubuntu 11.04 because of this problem, among other issues.

I have already tried looking through several forums and haven't got anywhere. I have verified BIOS settings, attempted to download the correct driver for the chipset from downloadcenter.intel.com which only appeared to have support for Fedora, have updated xserver-xorg-video-intel and made sure libgl1-mesa-glx is installed, but to no avail. I have not tried messing with xorg.conf, but I'm not experienced enough to know what to do.

I believe the specific chipset model is: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT (taken from glxinfo).

Here is the lspci output:

Not sure how much of that will be useful but I wanted to cover all the bases. I've been using Linux for three years now and have only had these monitor problems since upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04. I am marginally happier with Mint and would really rather not have to mess around with distros again, at least until the next Ubuntu or Mint release.

Re: Katya screen resolution issue

Post by xenopeek »

Hi, this sounds like a pain. From some past problems I had, can give you some tips.

ddcprobe
Install ddcprobe to get a list of video resolutions that your monitor (even on laptop) is supporting.:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xresprobe
sudo ddcprobe
Is it supporting higher resolutions? You can also look at the man page for some more options/information on ddcprobe.

gtf and xrandr
Using gtf and xrandr you can force your video card into a higher resolution, which you can safely do if ddcprobe is listing that resolution as possible. First, find out the name of your video interface as xrandr knows it:

Code: Select all

xrandr
Look for the line that has "connected" on it, with you current video resolution. The first word on that line is the name of your video interface as xrandr knows it.

Now lets say you want to go to 1280 x 1024 resolution. Use gtf to get the info you need for this, the last number is the refresh rate (keep it at that unless you know for sure you can go higher):

Code: Select all

gtf 1280 1024 60
From the output of gtf copy all the text after the word Modeline, and use it in the first command below (I've put 1280x1024x60 example there). On my machine xrandr knows my video interface as HDMI1, so replace that in below example in the latter two commands with how xrandr knows the video interface on your machine.

Executing the following three commands will switch your monitor to the higher resolution:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI1 "1280x1024_60.00"
xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode "1280x1024_60.00"
If this works, you can put this in a script to automatically do this each boot (replace the 3 xrandr lines with the ones that work for you):

Code: Select all

mkdir ~/Scripts
gedit ~/Scripts/fix-resolution.sh
# insert:
#!/usr/bin/env sh
xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI1 "1280x1024_60.00"
xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode "1280x1024_60.00"
# done
chmod +x ~/Scripts/fix-resolution.sh
sudo ln -s ~/Scripts/fix-resolution.sh /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45fixresolution
Hope this helps, at least ddcprobe and xrandr -r should give more information. So post that here if it doesn't work.

Thank you very much for the help. I've set the resolution to 1366x768 for the moment, which appears to work ok except that it is very temperamental; sometimes it reverts to the incorrect one with black strips, or the screen just goes black for a while.

I've tried using xrandr etc, but keep getting error messages:

ddcprobe output:

Others were accepted (e.g. 1280x1024x16m) but then failed at --addmode with the following message:

Hi, glad this helped a bit. You write "1280x1024x64k" mode you were not able to set. Just to be clear, with gtf the third number you give is the refresh rate, not the color depth. Also with xrandr, I'm not sure you can set the color depth--only the height, widht and refresh rate. Leave the refresh rate at 60 unless you know your monitor to be able to handle more--else you can damage it!

Thanks again, I tried it leaving the refresh rate at 60, and kept getting error messages at the --addmode stage:

Code: Select all

xrandr --addmode LVDS1 "1280x1024_60.00"
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request: 29
Current serial number in output stream: 30
luburru@Barnabas ~ $ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 "1280x1024_60"
xrandr: cannot find mode "1280x1024_60"
luburru@Barnabas ~ $ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 "1280x1024 60"
xrandr: cannot find mode "1280x1024 60"
luburru@Barnabas ~ $ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 1280x1024_60.00
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request: 31
Current serial number in output stream: 32
xrandr --addmode "LVDS1" 1280x1024_60.00
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request: 29
Current serial number in output stream: 30
As you can see I kept getting errors regardless of the way I put in the data. I'm certain that LVDS1 is the correct name, since I took it directly from the xrandr output:

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm
   1366x768 60.0*+
   1360x768 59.8 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
I should probably note also that I didn't get this output from the command xrandr -r, but just xrandr: the list of options told me that xrandr -r is for setting the refresh rate rather than finding out the names of screens detected. (I did try setting xrandr -r to 60 just in case, but it didn't help either.)

I'm not sure about the error you are getting. According to the DDCProbe output, you should be able to set 1280x1024 mode. Can you share result of xrandr --verbose

xrandr --verbose gives:

Re: Katya screen resolution issue

Post by xenopeek »

Toshiba site is listing your machine as highest supported resolution being 1366 x 768, and you can see in xrandr --verbose you are able to switch to that mode. Why DDCProbe is showing you can go to 1280 x 1024 (and not listing 1366 x 768), has me a bit stumped.

I guess you should be able to set highest resolution with:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode "1366x768"

It looks like the highest resolution is generally working, albeit temperamentally - at least it seems to be remembering that setting each time I boot, so no worries. Thanks for the help!

I used xenopeek's solution - it worked really well.

Thanks :)

Sorry to hijack this thread.....

Vincent:
I've been having major problems with a DVI to 2 VGA splitter cable (giving the same output on two LCD monitors [one 19 inch and one 17 inch]) - Mint 10 kept putting my resolution back to 1024x768 (I guess it was thinking of the 17 inch monitor) on re-boot unless I unplugged the splitter and plugged only my main (19 inch) LCD monitor in - I could then unplug it, add the splitter into the equation and the resolution would hold - a major drag to do that every morning !!!

I used your method and created the script - I now have the correct resolution of 1280x1024 all the time.

A thousand thanks !

This was driving me mad, so thank-you very much.

It all worked! :D
And then I rebooted... :(
I used the two codes below which created and opened a .sh file.
mkdir ~/Scripts
gedit ~/Scripts/fix-resolution.sh

Then I put the following into the text pad (.sh file), saved and closed.

Code: Select all

# insert:
#!/usr/bin/env sh
xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-1 "1368x768_60.00"
xrandr --output DVI-1 --mode "1368x768_60.00"
# done
After which I input the last two codes in one at a time, entering the password for the last one.
chmod +x ~/Scripts/fix-resolution.sh
sudo ln -s ~/Scripts/fix-resolution.sh /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45fixresolution

Any idea what went wrong? Because when I rebooted the screen was small again and I have to manually input the codes to adjust the resolution.

After entering the script manually the screen resolution became available in the monitor settings, by selecting and applying it the problem has been resolved. Thank you very much for this info, I wasn't able to find anything else that helped.

Thank you Luburru! My display was working perfectly (Samsung Syncmaster 920N on Mint 12) with 1280x1024 resolution, then suddenly my system was not recognising my monitor and defaulted to VGA. With your solution I can now use 1280x1024 on the VGA "unrecognised" monitor. Hopefully I can get the monitor properly recognised later but right now I can use the right resolution. Many thanks!
