Need instructions to get wicd onto gnome edition

Add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list

##  Wicd Updates 
deb http://wicd.longren.org gutsy extras
It may be easier to do the rest from Synaptic (Package Manager)
Open Synaptic and click Refresh (the two circular green arrows)
Then search for wicd and install it and use it
I think you should uninstall Network Manager before you use wicd, it's always possible to reinstall
