just for the record, in a nvidia system, the upgrade looks like this
Code: Select all
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libgl1-nvidia-alternatives libgl1-nvidia-glx nvidia-glx
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libgl1-mesa-dev libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libglu1-mesa mesa-common-dev
  xserver-common xserver-xorg-core
7 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 3 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 19.6 MB of archives.
After this operation, 45.6 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

we should wait for a better day to update 8)

Hey "zz" :)

If we are running the Nvidia driver do we even need any of the mesa stuff?
I just locked all the mesa related packages as "thomasmc" suggested. I was then able to update the
"xserver-common (2:1.10.2-1+wheezy1) to 2:1.10.2-2".

Then
"xserver-xorg-core (2:1.10.2-1+wheezy1) to 2:1.10.2-2"
would not upgrade until (libgl1-mesa-dri) was removed, so I went ahead and chanced a removal of "libgl1-mesa-dri", and all is fine.
I am thinking its ok to remove ALL mesa related packages, but will leave them locked until I am sure.
This would presumably stop future "mesa--Nvidia" breakages. :?:

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Wayne
I have tried SMXI before, and like some others its less than perfect for me. I use the liquorix kernel, and it has upgrades "often" :D
With SMXI the Liquorix kernel upgrades break Nvidia, entailing re-installing Nvidia with SMXI, not a huge bid deal.
BUT, I installed Nvidia through synaptic. Really pretty easy following the tutorial. This way the new kernel upgrades (maybe one every month or so?) automatically recompile Nvidia. I have never had to re-install Nvidia. SMXI is a good tool, but more work for me. I installed Nvidia last Dec when I first installed LMDE, and its been running perfectly since.

This "MESA" upgrade would have been the first problem, if I had not locked the mesa packages.
I am just thinking I can delete all the MESA packages, and cure that problem.

Update 2 july 2011- better hold the upgrades for now the new xorg and mesa will break the nvidia and ati drivers viewtopic.php?f=141&t=67502&start=680#p442574

Just a note on "xorg". It wont break Nvidia. I upgraded both the xorg packages today, Nvidia is working fine. Its the "MESA" packages that will break it.
"xserver-xorg-core " will remove (libgl1-mesa-dri), but that didn't cause any problems.

I wish I hadn't done that upgrade on auto pilot! The question is can I unbork my computer or is it a fresh start?

I saw an earlier post about using the stable repositories but that didn't work for me.

Got my first borkage. Because my new laptop has an integrated video card, the video is fine after the last update.

Unfortunately, my touchpad seems to have stopped working (a USB mouse works fine)

Re. Nvidia problem.

I can just confirm the same on my system. My temporary solution is:

Code: Select all
echo libgl1-mesa-glx hold | dpkg --set-selections

The rest of the update then proceeds normally with the mesa package held.

You can then look at releasing the package at a later date whenever any conflicts have been resolved.

NB First problem I have had with LMDE for months, it has been dramatically stable recently, a real joy to use.

hi trollboy, follow the post by Lewdsquirrel in the previous page viewtopic.php?f=141&t=67502&start=680#p442696 and you should have gui again;

after that use the "hold" switch provided by viking and you can update safely;

hope you can save it :)

Re: Nvidia-Drivers
I solved it this way for me:
start synaptic,enable/add the unstable repository (sid)+refresh, search for "nvidia", update your nvidia-packages to 275.09.07-4.
Disable the unstable repository (sid)+refresh. Now its possible to do all the Xorg and Mesa Updates.
Reboot and all should be fine.

Unfortunately, I cleared my apt cache about a week ago. Funny how when ever you throw something out, you need it a few days later :D still this solution worked for me and I didn't even need to reboot. Now I just have to stop it wanting to remove Compiz!

Ah well an upgrade as opposed to a dist-upgrade will handle that for now. It has been so stable recently, I forgot it's based on testing!

Thanks all.

I think mint updater in LMDE should come with a "key packages list" which would contains packages that should never be removed by updates if installed, like nvidia-glx, mintmenu, fglrx, grub, etc. Could be an option located near the "include update which require removal of other packages" one, something like "preserve key packages from being removed by updates". This way it could be used to safely update without running across such troubles.

Now, as GeneC asked in a previous post:
Could an expert confirm if it's safe to remove any "mesa" packages from the system when using proprietary Nvidia drivers??

Thanks.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 2 july 2011

Postby haikufan on Sat Jul 02, 2011 11:14 am

Hello, I accidentally did the update, and now I get only the command line login screen after boot. It's strange: With a blank xorg.conf not even the login comes but a flickering pointer, apparently trying to start X. My graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS, but the onboard Radeon HD4290 has the same effect.
I cannot use Lewdsquirrel's method to reinstall the old packages because I told Synaptic/apt to remove the packages immediately after installation to save disk space.
Please help me, I haven't really an idea of deep apt commands.

I never installed the propriatary ATI drivers on my (64-bit) ATI machine, and just tried to do so on my (32-bit) nVidia machine today using Neck's nVidia install method. I was using the basic nVvidia driver before today.

Today's upgrade did not bork my ATI machine that never had the propriatary ATI driver. After applying Neck's nVidia driver install method, I got a command line boot up, not a flickering pointer.

Now that you have removed xorg.conf and can't get to a command line, that's a problem. Did you delete the mesa driver a while back?

I don't know what I did and I really wish to have graphical access to my install log...
It's not a big problem to get access to the files due to another Linux installation in which I write this lines.
