[SOLVED] Strange Gnome Terminal Behavior

Postby mikecz on Sat Jul 02, 2011 10:29 pm

I don't know where to put this, so I figured I'd post it here, since I'm running Mint XFCE 201104.

All of a sudden, whenever I open a terminal, it shrinks down to be approximately 29 columns wide down from the standard 80. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is rather annoying to have to manually drag the window to the right size almost every time.

I've tried to hard-set the colum width in the Gnome Terminal profile, and that doesn't seem to make a difference.

It doesn't seem to have been correlated to any updates, so any advice would be appreciated.

MikeC

I did find some info that this may be a known bug in GT, but I haven't found how to fix it.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Sorry, I have no advice but only the same problem here and perhaps some more information.

It seems that all gnome applications which were updated to 3.* have some skinning issues. For example the gnome-system-monitor is not skinned as well, i.e. it has just some ugly, gray standard skin. I'm no expert there, but I think it has something to do with the different version of gtk+ required for gnome 3.*.

A different skin for some application would not be a problem while waiting for further updates, but the shrinking of the terminal is rather annoying...

I think that the skinning program just happens when a Gnome app does not run on Gnome: it also happens on KDE, no matter if GTK 2 or 3 is used.

Well, everything was fine until the gnome applications were updated to the 3.* branch. Applications which were not updated until now are still being skinned correctly.

More info on this thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=67502&start=660#p441221
Either install/use "xfce4-terminal"
or modify this command line to open the terminal
"gnome-terminal --geometry 119x28+0+0"
the "119" parameter is the width and the "28" the depth

xfce4-terminal did the trick.

Thanks a lot.
