Wine packages missing from Debian repos [SOLVED]
Somebody told me that he cannot install Wine on LMDE.
Tried it myself on my Acer Aspire One netbook, using LMDE 32-bit.
Attempted install from Synaptic.
Lots of Wine packages missing on servers, could not install.

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
The way I did it was to follow this link: http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/
Granted, it is "doing it the hard way" but it worked great to get wine 1.3 installed in LMDE.

Please somebody post easy to follow instructions for this installation.
I followed the link that tdockery mentioned, but found instructions too advanced for my present level.

OK, here goes:ckosloff wrote:Please somebody post easy to follow instructions for this installation.
I followed the link that tdockery mentioned, but found instructions too advanced for my present level.
1. Look for the list of packages for your architecture (32bit or 64bit)
2. Download each file in the list (there will be 18-19 files)
3. In your Downloads directory there will now be 18-19 .deb files
4. While in the Downloads directory, right-click on a blank space and select open in Terminal
5. Your command prompt should now look something like: tom@tom-laptop:~/Downloads$
6. Enter the following command:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
8. Once it is done installing, you can delete all the .deb files in Downloads
9. Enjoy Wine 1.3
Mint Cinnamon 20.1
Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
I regularly use wine to run a couple of windows apps. Since debian versions are quite old, I download the latest deb from ubuntu ppa and install it. So far, no problems. Currently running 1.3.24.

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
Please do not install Ubuntu packages on LMDE, Debian and Ubuntu packages/libs do not play nice together. While it may work OK for you it may complete trash someone's system.anmys wrote:I regularly use wine to run a couple of windows apps. Instead follow tdockery97's advice and use :
Directory listing | Wine (wine-unstable) packages - http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/
Or you can try using the Mepis testing repos. http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testr ... st/w/wine/ which is only 1 version behind upstream.
Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
Hi
I am running standard LMDE (Wheezy?) with kernel 2.6.38.2 on a 686 32bits computer
I suppressed in Synaptic everything related to Wine before because the previous install broke eight dependencies. Then I installed again on a clean slate these newly downloaded 19 deb packages. Got some problems using the above instructions (see code below).
I tried to pick up the missing packages but I realized I would probably mess up my system because some had a lot of other dependencies and libopena11 was missing anyway from Debian repos.
Cancelled everything and wait for another opportunity.
It would have been a quantum leap forward though.
Will try Mepis. How many packages am I to download from Mepis directory for a i386 install? Only one?
Note: as I could not get rid in Synaptic of some "résidus de configuration" (leftover configuration files, not sure about the exact English word for it), before installing back again the 1.0.1 Wine version, I used this cleaning command successfully

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
FYI there is an unofficial repository for aptosid (debian based) from which you can easily install (and automatically update) the latest wine package.
Add the line above to /etc/apt/sources.list.
I also changed the pinning policy by adding the following lines to /etc/apt/preferences, in order to avoid undesired updates from packages other than wine.
(may not be the best policy ever, but it just worked in my case. If anyone knows a more robust one please let me know)
Update as usual:
You may want to install their keyrings before installing the wine package:
then you're ready to go with wine:
of course you may use Synaptic instead.
I used it with LMDE for several months without problems then I dismissed it just because I got tired of wine.
Note that the repository is not officially supported (like many others) and you can find it down from time to time so try it at your own risk.
Also, mixing distribution repositories is not recommended for beginners; watch carefully every operation or you can easily screw up your system.
Code: Select all
deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
Hi
Thank you ukbrian and Imdeman for your advices. I could not use both though.
@Imdeman
I followed your method and got Wine 1.3.24 perfectly working. Just before installing wine, I uninstalled the old one.
I am not sure to understand the reason of adding this in apt/preferences even with a low priority, as far as we already pin wine from this same repository?

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
@roger64
I'm glad it worked for you too.
As I said, I'm pretty sure there must be a better way to obtain this goal, but since it worked for me I didn't dig it further (my lazyness!).
I'm glad it worked for you too.
The intent was to prevent all-but-wine frickelplatz/sid packages with higher version and same priority (default 500) to take precedence over the debian/testing ones when updating or installing new packages because this was not as intended. In other words:roger64 wrote: I am not sure to understand the reason of adding this in apt/preferences even with a low priority, as far as we already pin wine from this same repository?Package: *

Take wine from frickelplatz repo and all other packages from the linuxmint, debian, etc repos
Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
Forgot all about the frickelplatz repo didn't realize towo had wine in there.
# towo's repository for aptosid/Debian sid
# secure APT - apt-get install frickelplatz-archive-keyring frickelplatz-keyring frickelplatz-keyrings
# deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
Using apt-pinning the way you did is probably the best way to do it. Either that or just install wine then comment it out until the next time you need to install wine from it.
If you run KDE4 xandras' repo has somethings not in the normal Debian repos. Including a nifty full-screen plugin/app for Amarok.

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
Hi,
The simplest way to do this would be to pull the .deb straight from winehq:
/etc/apt/sources.list:
#wine
deb http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ binary/
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine
That way you don't have to do any pinning.
take care,
speeves

1) it hasnt been updated in forever the newest version on sourceforge is from 2009
2) there is no Debian repo
even just trying to open http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/
gives:
Which is why there is no wine repo in my Giant sources.list, there isn't one.An error has been encountered in accessing this page.

Use a)the 3rd party unstable repo, b) mepis, c) frickel or d) build it from sources

you can also use this ubuntu ppa, just go with maverick for the address when you add it. works great

Re: Wine packages missing from Debian repos
good craigevil +1 for that
we almost need that warning in big red letters somewhere in the forum: Debian is not Ubuntu; mixing debs compiled to the former in a pure debian system is going to break it sooner or later;
and no, cristoff522, if you want to use it in your system, fine! just don't advise others with something that is wrong
