[SOLVED]Lockups on 2.6.39-2-686-pae kernel

Postby mikecz on Thu Jul 14, 2011 5:51 pm

(If this is in the wrong place, please let me know)

Ever since I went to the 2.6.39-2-686-pae kernel (HP HDX16; Centrino 2/4gig RAM/250meg HDU, running Mint XFCE 201104), once in a while, I've gotten some odd lockups.

It happened once switching between XFCE workspaces, and once when the machine had sat unused running a download for at least 45 minutes (given that the download had sucessfully completed). The symptoms were that it stopped responding to the keyboard or touchpad, and one oddity: the caps lock light kept flashing. I had to hard power off, which left the filesystem unclean, but I was able to fsck it both times (the 2nd times with an external USB key, just to be safe).

I've checked several of the logs (messages, dmesg, Xorg,) and nothing jumps out at me, so I don't know if its an X problem or something related to the kernel. I did have to manually install the Nvidia drivers for my card, and though it worked fine under 2.6.32-2.686, I don't know if I need to go to newer drivers, but Nvidia's site doesn't have any newer once listed for my card.

I'm a bit new to this sort of thing, so any guidance would be appreciated.

Mike,

Check this post in the LMDE Breakage thread viewtopic.php?f=141&t=67502&p=438453#p438314
It discusses missing kernel headers with the kernel upgrade and which package to install.

Hopefully this fixes the problem for you.

I thought I had installed the headers package as well; I let the kernel upgrade via Update Manager and it bombed, then removed the 2.6.39 packages since I didn't want to mess with it at the time, and I went back and manually installed via Synaptic once I figured out what I needed to do to get it working for me.

I will check for the headers file when I have the machine handy later today.

ADDENDUM:

Turns out I installed pretty much every header package except the one I should have. I have done this, and marked the subject as SOLVED, pending it running for a while.

Thanks for the help. These forums are a welcome change to some of the other distro forums I've patronized.
