2 Very Easy Ways to Make LM Better

Postby SpawnHappyJake on Tue Jul 12, 2011 2:00 am

Please fix the fstab so that the floppy line is:
Code: Select all
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

instead of whatever it is now _by_default_. I'm typing this post from a Live Linux Mint 11 64-bit Install thumb drive, and it doesn't even have a floppy line in the fstab. I'm not on a computer with a floppy drive now, but I know the default doesn't allow floppies to mount as of Linux Mint 10 (and I doubt anything was done about it since then), and changing it to the above fixes it. Also, upon detection of a floppy diskette, the following needs to be triggered:
Code: Select all
udisks --mount /dev/fd0
to mount the floppy automatically.
I know less and less people use floppies, but this is so easy to fix, why not? It'd save a lot of pain for the few people that still use floppies, that's for sure. I had a lot of pain trying to find that solution.
I know anyone can edit the fstab to be whatever, but please put this in the default. It would make things easier on people.

Please edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list file to be:
Code: Select all
deb file:///usr/share/local-repository binary/
,
again, _by_default. I know anyone can edit this themselves, but it saves pain to just not have the problem to begin with. I am in the Live Linux Mint 11 64-bit Installer from a thumb drive as I type this, and this _is_ what the line says in the installer's /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list file, but when I install Linux Mint 11 64-bit, that actual installation's /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list file says:
Code: Select all
deb file:///usr/share/local-repository katya

This wrong default makes Synaptic not work. Applying the above correction fixes it.

Please implement these.

The floppy not mounting is a bug in Nautilus, not a bug in Mint. An fstab entry should not be needed.

Maybe the floppy workaround can be implemented until the Nautilus bug is fixed?

It seems like I tried to browse the floppy with terminal (cd and dir) and couldn't, though it's been a while. I'll believe that a Nautilus bug is part of the problem (that makes itself obvious), but it sure seems like there's more than that. The fstab entry did fix the problem for me.

Cheers,
Jake

But for me - with a USB floppy - this does not help. The bug in Nautilus has to be fixed. I'm looking into the source code right now.

The bug has been found long ago. It should have been fixed in Mint 10. This commit may be the cause that it again regressed before Mint 10's release?
I am just trying some things to fix it, will report back if I have found a fix.

On my LM 11 the fstab reads: /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
This is /etc/fstab. And there are 2 more fstab.

and I get: udisks --mount /dev/fd0
Mount failed: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device

/etc/fstab is the only fstab file that has to be edited for floppy use. The other files will surely be fstab related, but are not the filesystem table itself.

About the floppy bug. Sorry but the current Git of udisks is broken so I can't test if it's an Ubuntu bug or if it's upstream. Upstream it is said to be fixed a year ago.
