Oh, and mrsfixit, after cruising some of the forums, including some of the other ones, I read that if a machine running Linux starts to get too hot, it will shut down as a safety measure (must be a Linux thing because Windows never did that). After the machine shut down after my iPod being nowhere near it, I put the laptop up on a couple of plastic bottlecaps (it does tend to get very warm, you know).

Never had that problem again, and was able to load up half my iPod without the computer shutting down (which is a 16 GB 4th gen Nano, FWIW). It took a while (the USB ports are 1.0, which is both bogus and sad), but it still works.
