Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
Those nvidia (non-free) driver breakages look to be what recently got fixed; in unstable (due to multi-arch adjustment folder errors). If your nvidia, direct graphics has failed, the easiest thing, might be, to Google, and install the smxi scripts (helps with managing your entire system; immensely), including it's graphics card install section. If the debian way, for nvidia, doesn't work, there are other options (about 3 major, and automated ways, to make nvidia just work). Then, in a few days, you can just set it back, to the Debian way, for nvidia install.

I never go backwards. python-imaging 1.1.7-4 in the SID repository will fix the problem.
How do I get Synaptic to install "python-imaging 1.1.7-4" ?
That's why fliteshare put the smiley behind his remark

well, NRI, that's what gives playing with unstable, you get better support here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... &start=160
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
Thanks, zerozero. Lesson learned. Hopefully, debian will fix this problem soon.
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
i wouldn't trust that much, unfortunately
this is other of the Gnome3 signs creping in into debian, and there's no way to stop it; the next couple months are going to be very disruptive in gnome-land;
you can either do the whole jump and install the shell ( http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... &start=120 ), turn back to xfce (debian based as well) or if you want to stick with gnome, follow at least for now the safe way and go with the update packs ( http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=76556 )

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
Thanks again, zerozero. Right now, I have edit my sources list to go with the stable version. Also, I am trying to roll back the changes and revert back to the old versions. If this doesn't work, I have to find out how to either put XFCE or LXDE on my machine. If all of that fails, I might just go the shell route for Gnome 3.
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
NR1: If you (or somebody else) want to run LMDE with Debian stable, you can read about how to do here: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/497
You will get a super-stable Linux Mint Debian system!

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
what's happen if I don't have it /var/cache/apt/archives cause I did apt-get autoremove for example. how can I fix it?Hi guys,
like some of you, the latest updates broke my shinny LMDE, because I was using Nvidia proprietary drivers, and was too stupid to notice that the update was going to remove them! Damn.
So after the next reboot, I'm stuck with a black screen asking me to login...
I did some research on the Internet and found out that it's still possible to reinstall packages if the ".deb" files are still on the system, even an older version. I also checked the history in Synaptics to know what packages have been upgraded before the breakage.
Here is a list of files and versions you have to "restore".
libgl1-mesa-dev (7.10.2-3)
libgl1-mesa-dri (7.10.2-3)
libgl1-mesa-glx (7.10.2-3)
libglu1-mesa (7.10.2-3)
mesa-common-dev (7.10.2-3)
xserver-common (2:1.10.2-1+wheezy1)
xserver-xorg-core (2:1.10.2-1+wheezy1)
Then you'll be able to reinstall:
libgl1-nvidia-alternatives
libgl1-nvidia-glx
nvidia-glx
Now, all the installed packages (and all versions) are supposed to be stored in "/var/cache/apt/archives", so if you are stuck at the black screen, do the following (change the "i386" in the commands below if you use a 64 bit system):
- Login with the usual username
- type "cd /var/cache/apt/archives"
- type "sudo dpkg -i libgl1-mesa-glx_7.10.2-3_i386.deb"
- type "sudo dpkg -i libglu1-mesa_7.10.2-3_i386.deb"
- type "sudo dpkg -i mesa-common-dev_7.10.2-3_i386.deb"
- type "sudo dpkg -i xserver-common_2%3a1.10.2-1+wheezy1_all.deb"
- type "sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.10.2-1+wheezy1_i386.deb"
- type "sudo dpkg -i libgl1-mesa-dri_7.10.2-3_i386.deb"
- type "sudo dpkg -i libgl1-mesa-dev_7.10.2-3_i386.deb"
Once it's done, you can reinstall the Nvidia packages by typing:
- sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-alternatives
- sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-glx
- sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
Thank you , zerozero and Sven. Great insights and very helpful links.
Last night I rebuilt the system, because trying to roll back the updates totally didn't work. Then, I changed the dependencies to a more stable version and hopefully, this will have taken care of the problem. It would be great if LMDE would come out every once in a while with a new ISO. Downloading more than 500MB of new packages/updates can be a very long project for people with slower connections.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
@delinquent,
if you don't have the files to restore, add 'unstable' repos temporarily to your sources.list.
install nvidia-glx and don't forget
afterwards.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
These forums are great!!!. (this thread in particular solved my initramfs problem during an update)
I've been in Linux now for 8 years after having no/0/zip/nada experience in *nix (except for "HelloWorld" in college). I "cut my teeth" as a Windows 3.0 developer way back when.
Since 2003 (when I started using 64-bit Linux), forums like this, have helped me not only develop valuable Linux expertise, but also evangelize Linux and get rid of a lot of the FUD out there.
Thanks

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
just to report that the issue with nvidia is now solved in testing, v.07-5 has migrated from sid, so if you are tracking the testing repo, the dist-upgrade should be clean now;

All you need is patience
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
very true, patience
and what about ATI, can someone update the status? is the 11-6-2 v. that migrated to testing in the 15th safe?

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
just a thank you to zerozero for the heads up on the latest nvidia issue being fixed. I did the 'backport' option and used old packages. Today I updated the several hundred meg, with a little trepidation, and was pleasently surprized to find after a "full" reboot (shutdown, startup, I personally hate kexec) no apparent issues
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
This update worked for me on AMD 64 bit with nvidia graphics.
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
Todays update was the first one after about four weeks without trouble shootings necessary within or afterwards. Good times
for a new ISO

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
I will tell you something Gerd50, it never ceases to amaze me how different peoples experiences can be with virtually the same product. For me today's update was the first one in months that I even had to think about (the mesa/nvidia thing needed no thought it was so obvious). I had to think about this one because it changed grub - something which I had already modified myself.Gerd50 wrote:Todays update was the first one after about four weeks without trouble shootings necessary within or afterwards. I guess this is the thinking behind the new monthly update packs idea, trying to iron out these differences, although I have to say it is not an idea that appeals to me in the least.
Anyway I am glad you are happy with LMDE as it was originally produced, I am too
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 12 july 2011
ATI update of today successfully applied - mesa packages un-ignored (is that a word )all working as expected. (ATI Mobilty Radeon HD5400 series)
