Panels disappeared, no compiz.

Postby ShakeyJake on Fri Jul 15, 2011 3:16 pm

Hey guys,

I just booted in and the panels at the top and bottom of the screen are missing. Actually, I think they're still there because full-screening a window leaves a taskbar-sized gap of background above and below the window. I have tried running 'gnome-panel' but it doesn't do anything, at least not that I can see. Also, all of my compiz fancy stuff has stopped and there are no close/minimise/maximise buttons any more so I'm fairly sure the issue is graphical somewhere.

Any ideas? It's very frustrating having to launch apps one terminal at a time.

Thanks in advance. :-)
Jack :)

Hi!
I have tried running 'gnome-panel'

Try instead:
Code: Select all
killall gnome-panel

If I do that, the windows bounce like something has happened, but then back to square one. I can keep killing it all day, so maybe it's restarting straight away?

You could try installing `fusion icon'
This gives you controls for the window manager (ie/ compiz) including re-compositing.
should be in software manager or synaptic.
I find it to be a neccesity.

Make sure that you've done all updates, including those to Compiz. If it still does not work, open CompizConfig, go to Window Decorator and replace gtk-window-decorator with compiz-decorator.

Duncan: I already have the fusion icon, but without the panels I have no idea how to use it. :-)

Albert: Thanks as well but that didn't change anything either.

I have just tried completely removing compiz and everything associated with it, that restored my window buttons but still no panels.

I do appreciate everyone's help guys.

By any chance has your vertical screen size been changed? I mean changed by the monitor settings, not via the operating system software.

Press Alt-F2, and in that window, execute gnome-panel. That way you get your panel back.

If it still does not load automatically, you can open Startup Applications from the menu and add gnome-panel.

That does look like me, thanks zero. I had no idea I was using sid, but sure enough my /etc/apt/sources.list includes debian unstable. Is there a way to go back?

ShakeyJake, looks like today, in the thread i linked before there's a workaround for it. I advise you to check that :)
