Scanner crashes LMDE 64 [SOLVED]

Post by ckosloff »

LMDE 64 on HP Pavilion DV 8000, all the latest updates installed.
Here is my sources list:
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
Sane and xsane packages are correctly installed.
This is an old scanner I had to put firmware as shown:

This is same location as I put it in another LMDE 32 box, it works fine there, and that box is older than this one.
I had to add my user to the root group to make it work there, did same in LMDE 64.
However, when I fire up xsane in my LMDE 64 box, it crashes the system completely and it logs me off.
I discard a hardware problem, because this scanner worked fine with Julia 64.

Is there a log file so I can see what is causing the crash?

I'm not on LMDE at the moment, but if you look under one of the application folders (system possibly) there is an application called "log file viewer" or something similar - lets you read all the system logs.

Menu -> Applications -> System Tools -> Log File Viewer.
I see lots of logs, do not know which one will give me an inkling as to what causes the crash.

Your best bet would be to look at all of them, and try to find one that has logged information at the time of the crash, although if the crash results in you being logged off then this could involve a lot of searching.

Sorry to not be more help, but I don't have access to a scanner at the moment.

Thanks for replies.
This was not the only crash, Libre Office was crashing the system all the time too.
Maybe something went wrong with the huge amount of updates from 201012, system was unusable.
I had to return to Julia 64, I had a good backup, comp works OK now.
I was hoping to get a rolling distro, have LMDE 32 on two machines and it works fine.
Guess that I will have to wait for the LMDE 64 respin or load Squeeze.
