Today I managed to update LMDE into state according picture.
I used as base linuxmint-debian-201101-gnome-dvd-i386.iso.
I had to download more than one thousand packages and some restarts.

I do not know if I it is correct. I'm using "latest" repo and I have update pack 2 too this time.

Ok I just did a total reinstall and it seemed to fix the issue so far, now I am going to change the repos and see if it happens then.
Well well it seems a total reinstall fix everything weird maybe I missed something in my last install don't know but I know a lot of folks are getting the same errors but a reinstall seemed to fix it so far :D
Back to normal again

Hi Dar-es-Salaam

Dar-es-Salaam wrote:Hi Sam,

Ya I researched it and tried everything myself, I know there is a bug for all the things that were happening to mine, the binfmt-support, the jarwrapper issue, the insserv issue, the sfmpd issue.
I finally gave up trying to fix all these errors and did a complete reinstall this time it seemed to fix itself when I did it, they all went away, I no longer have any errors anymore, I'm not sure what happened maybe I added something that caused all this but I know there are a lot of other people having these issues also after looking for answers all over the place.
I still have to install my samsung printer drivers and my (cough hack) lexmark printer drivers and I know one part was something to do with the lsb also so it should be interested to see if these caused the issue, I've been installing one thing at a time and testing to see if it did anything but so far it's all good.
It might also have been in my last install where I didn't reboot after updating the grub during the install. I just kept updating one after another update, I can't remember if I even finished all the orginal updates because even after I updated the grub this time and did a reboot and thought the original updates were done, I decided to try
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
one more time before switching the repos and volia I had over another 600mb of updates to do, this was after I did the intital dist-upgrade and the install -f after they all didn't go through, so maybe that caused it because it was never done after that, I just thought everything wwas done and switched the repos.
Who knows what went wrong I've been scratching my head on it too much where my head is sore now
But a complete resinstall fixed it for me.
Hope this helps

Just found this link that might help you out also: http://journalxtra.com/2010/03/fixing-the-dreaded-errors-were-encountered-while-processing-errors/

I got a really silly question ... in the update manager I got a Select all button but I can't find an easy way to unselect all the package. I got a list of 270 packages available and I just want to install 10 of them. What is the best way to do that through the Update Manager (selecting all and then unselect manually the 260 packages I don't want does not seems clever).
Thank you in advance

To unselect all the listed updates just click the "Clear" button on the far left hand side of the tool bar. It's just to the left of the "Select all" button. Once the check boxes are clear then you can check only the ones you wish to install. :D

Hi Sam,

Well I have just done a complete reinstall yet again and yes it still does not work. I noticed that it made a reference to an snd-wavefront file, I thought I had made a copy of its location but I can't find it, can you give me a pointer please ? :D I don't know if that will help though. As it was installing I made a not of most if not all of the error messages that I spotted, attached is the list. Another thing I have just changed my repros to incomming and is says that they are out of date and will not download anything. I do not have a copy of the originals can you supply please ?.

Hi All

I think I have just found out why ......pae does not work on my PC, I only have 1 gig of ram. Am I right ? If so I will mark this as solved and can I make it auto boot onto ...-5-686 ?
Cheers

Aaah! Physical Address Extension kernels are for memories greater than 4 gb. If you use Synaptic to remove it, the old kernel will take its place in the grub list.

I just checked out the log WOW  a lot of errors. The f-spot error I got also but it didn't do anything to my system other than give me that error, it works fine.
I only have 3 gigs of ram also but it works fine, I did get one more error with the minissdpd
Code: Select all
Errors were encountered while processing: minissdpd
 minissdpd (1.0-2)
E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list

I just deleted it and got rid of that error  hopefully I didn't need it, but I figured if I did I would just reinstall it and try again to find a fix I'm not an expert by no means but it works fine so far, hopefully Steve has the fix for you :D
It would be nice to hear if it did it so others that have the same issue will know how to fix it.
Also my reinstall went as follows the last time I did a reinstall I think I missed a step which probably created my issues.
1: install from the ISO, I partioned my hard drive with 4 partitions
a: boot (gave 4 gigs) used ext 4
b: / (gave 40gigs) etc 4
c: swap (gave 6 gigs)
d: home (gave the rest) ext 4
A bit excessesive but I had enough memory and I would rather have more in each then less.
After install finished I rebooted and did a (sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) when the window came up explaining some stuff I press q to get rid of it, not all things got installed the first time around so I did a (sudo apt-get install -f) this installed whatever else was there, when grub came up in the terminal I did not install it then but waited till it was finished installing then did a (sudo apt-get install grub && sudo update-grub) this is where I went wrong the last time I think because after this I switched the repos, this time I rebooted first, after reboot I did another (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) just in case and there was over 600mb to download and install (kind of surprised me) so I did it, did another reboot tried it again and there was nothing else to upgrade, THEN I changed the repos and did that (with more upgrades) rebooted and checked again unitl there were no more upgrades to do.
I don't know if doing it different and missing an upgrade before changing repos would cause any issues but I kept doing each step unitl there was nothing more to upgrade before moving onto the next step.
Hopefully this can help someone, maybe not maybe so.
Gordon I hope you get it going

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)

Postby grizzler on Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:22 pm

After seeing the same problems with the old iso mentioned again and again over the past couple of weeks, I'm really surprised people are still doing full reinstalls before the respin is available... :?

And no, the pae kernels are not just for systems with a lot of memory. There won't be anymore non-pae 686 kernels. This was mentioned over a month ago in the breakages thread: viewtopic.php?f=141&t=67502&start=640#p438314, the relevant bit being: http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/2011/07/#lk-i386.

@Gordon,
A 'fix' for the '/lib/libacl*' error in relation to the 2.6.39-2-686-pae kernel is mentioned here: viewtopic.php?f=141&t=77878&p=453055&hilit=lib%2Flibacl%2A#p453036.

The problem with the out of date incoming repository should be fixed if you install the new update manager mintupdate-debian (temporarily switch back to testing if necessary). This should put a file called 80mintupdate-debian in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ which contains the line
Acquire::Check-Valid-Until "false";
to switch off the date check that causes the problem.

Gordon, i will just add to what grizzler said above:
- from your last log it looks like (no, i'm positive  ) a partial update:
- you ran the update/dist-upgrade and it broke in the perl upgrade (as it has been said several times around that it would)
- after that you must run
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -f install
to clear the errors
- and then again the update/dist-upgrade command

I agree with zero about the partial upgrade, I'm 50 to 100% sure that was my issue the last time because I didn't finish the upgrade before switching repos.
This time after the intial update/dist-upgrade and thn install -f I rebooted and did another update/dist-upgrade and again another 600 plus upgrades were there (I didn't do this last time) rebooted and did it again until they all went away and there were no more Then and only then did I switch repos.
That was my fault last time it had nothing to do with the ISO or anything else but impatience and wanting to get it done too quick. You might think the updates and upgrades are done but try again just to make sure. It worked for me this time.

Hi zerozero

Thanks for that.

I ran apt get -f install and got 0 to upgrade 0 to install all the downloads were complete, I have remove live-initramfs as said and it seem to have cured the problem with pae as it seem to have installed it at the same time. I have not done a reboot as yet though. :D

Hi zerozero, sam

I have just done a reboot after removing live-initramfs and all is ok booted up no trouble, aint life great. :D :D

The fspot problem didn't worry me as I dont use it I use digkam.

With regards to the RAM thing I am sorry I must have misread it

anyway thanks for the help with pae, now to try and tackle the next one /lib/libacl :D

PS just realised that lib/libacl is part of the above so no worries there now either :D

debian.linuxmint.org - for people that want to use the update packs or incoming repo
ftp.debian.org - for people that want to use Debian without Mints update related things.

If there's only 1 main repo (ftp.debian.org, debian.linuxmint.org latest and/or incoming) it should be fine.

Albert,

Aside from the obvious, what are the advantages of 64bit over 32bit OS's.....I just wanted to clerify this for myself...I keep hearing how 64bit is so much better......thanks

64-bit: you can use all your memory if your computer has more than 4GB) out of the box. The performance is some better, especially for CPU-intensive programs. But there's some more memory used - if your computer does not have that memory, it may get slower with 64-bit because it starts using swap. 64-bit works only on processors that support it: else it fails to boot. If you don't know if your processor supports it, run inxi -C and look for lm in the 'Flags' at the end of the second line. If there's lm somewhere between the ( and ), your processor supports 64-bit and you can use it.

32-bit: you need to install the PAE kernel (linux-pae in the repo) if you want to use more than 4 GB. The memory consumption is less, but the performance of CPU-intensive programs is less too.
