KDE Addition

Hey guys

ok basically im wondering what the best way to go about installing KDE is. id love to try KDE on mint but i really dont want to have to download the iso version and reinstall, rebackup all my data, games, folders, videos and all that

So id love to install KDE as another session so i can test it

But i was also wondering what version it is. id love to try KDE 4.7, every arch user using it has given it the thumbs up. its a really good release even better than 4.6.2

Ok now for my concern, yes im sure i could install kde generally through the software manager or package manager. but as i said, what version is it and does it come with all the preinstalled mint software/applications that mint 10 KDE comes with from the iso

Like, for example. in fedora you could install KDE general, or do yum install @kde-desktop , the desktop addition installs all the basic software, requirements, and extra's

And my final concern, my applications, if i do install it as an application, would it effect kde even if its another session if i have things like mutter installed on the gnome version. would there be conflicts and if so how can i avoid any software conflicts, i noticed this when doing E17 as a session. my software was all still accessable but alot didnt work

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I abhor KDE, but you may still like it 8) There is a thread here explaining how to add different desktop environments to the base install: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=65370&start=0

For trying I wouldn't personally do it that way though; I don't want to risk borking my system. I would just download the ISO (available for Linux Mint 10 http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=15) and run it in VirtualBox. Or if your system has limited memory, why not install it as dual-boot? You only need about 10GB free space to be able to install it for trying.

No need for Arch , Mageia Cauldron (future Mageia 2) has it too...

Yes, this is probably the best idea, if possible. Also, you can just try it in LiveCD mode. This can already give you some savor of it. Then, you'll be able to choose to install it... or not if you don't like it.

How did I miss that option :? I'm too used to VirtualBox I think. I need to think outside the box
LiveCD will be noticably slow in loading programs, but good for impression of what it looks like.

Why not try both :D Just download the ISO images, and put them on a bootable USB stick with unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/). That way you won't waste CD / DVD media and it will work faster also.
