screen resolution changed

My screen resolution changed by itself and I can't get it to change back using the Control Center. Which file can I edit to force it to what I want?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Sections "Monitor" (put your screen settings in the lines 'HorizSync' and 'VertRefresh') and "Screen" (for the resolutions)

And tonight, magically, the process of changing screen resolution using the Control Center works. And the lines in the Monitor section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf that had previously been suggested still aren't there.

? This section should be informed with various resolutions, e.g 1024x768 or 1600x1200 or........

In the section "Screen" you must fill the lines 'HorizSync' and 'VertRefresh' with the specifications on your screen.

Maybe you can post your xorg.conf...

P.S.= you must use 'sudo' to edit xorg.conf

Well, there's my xorg.conf file, in its entirety, as I find it today. I haven't edited it, so I assume it's in its "as installed" layout. I still don't see any lines about monitor settings and no list of various Depths with the screen resolutions available with each -- I do see all that info in the xorg.conf file in my Debian installation. So, I guess that means that my hardware is being "seen" in one Linux distro and not in another.

I posted somewhere that my desired screen resolution was finally able to be set up in the Control Center -- for several boots, it wouldn't work, and finally it did work. I hope someone can help me sort this out -- intermittent gremlins tend to chip away at what little is left of my sanity.

And now tonight, the screen resolution has once again changed to the 1280x1024 (?) by itself and cannot be changed back to 1024x768 via the Control Center.

I guess that "1440x900" is the maximum resolution for the Viewsonic Q19wb monitor.

I am surprised that you did not lines: 'HorizSync' and 'VertRefresh' in the "Monitor" section. Maybe try to add them with the specifications of you screen: 'VertRefresh' 56~75 Hz- 'HorizSync' 30~82 KHz like this:

You have also Debian on this computer? And your resolution in Debian works properly? Then you can try to copy 'these missing lines' from Debian xorg.conf to Mint xorg.conf (Mint is based on Ubuntu and Ubuntu on Debian so... :D )

You can also just try to type the command
