Looking at the error message in your original posting I'd say the cached files list of that package can't be read (but that's just me and I'm not a native English speaker). Apparently dpkg's database has become corrupted.
Does the file
/var/lib/dpkg/info/mint-x-theme.list exist? Can you display its contents without errors (the directory /var/lib/dpkg/info can have a lot of files, so

in a terminal is probably the quickest way to check)?

If the file is bad, maybe you can remove it. Mind you, I'm not at all sure removing the file would fix things. For all I know the file is in fact missing and
that is what's causing the problem.
Perhaps you can find something useful in the man pages for dpkg.

Beforehand, I tried someone else's idea, to update and dist-upgrade but there's no change.
I think you're right that the database is corrupted. However, I perceive that as a MINT problem. I've installed various distros so many times, I've used Debian, Mepis, sidux (now, aptosid), Fedora and Mint - Ubuntu versions, and never had this problem.

The other one just re-produced the same error message as before which I included in my initial post.
I'll have to install Debian, for e.g., since you can't use the system when you can't install a printer. I believe other packages won't install either.
