New mint 4 install drops to shell during boot.

Post by dungbeetle »

Hi Guys, I have been searching for a good distro for my new acer travelmate 7520 since I bought it a couple weeks ago. I was running pclos on my old dell but it is hopeless on this one. Very few distros seem to work on this without problems (in fact, ubuntu is probably closest, but I just cant get on with it) and I thought Mint was looking very promising so I installed it as everything seemed great, running from the live cd. Unfortunately, after the install, mint gives an error msg early during boot reading something like " bios bug ....8254 timer...no-apic". After a minute or so, it drops me to a shell and the only thing I can think to do is poweroff.

Searching for 8254 produced one thread with a similar problem except it appeared that the laptop booted fully, so I'm not sure if the advice to flash the bios still holds. I Would prefer another option first if there is one........

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Re: New mint 4 install drops to shell during boot.*SOLVED*

Got it working now after several install attempts. Seems to be a problem if you install the restricted drivers before starting to install the os. Also could only get ethernet to connect during boot. That is, I could not get a connection if I plugged in after the os had finished booting. Are these known bugs?
