Fedora 8

Post by hairy_Palms »

anyone tried it? whats your first impression, its definately improved a lots since i tried fedora core 6 but yum and its GUI's are still dog-slow compared to apt-get /synaptic the desktop itself its much faster and the later kernel 2.6.23 fixed the wireless woes i was getting with gutsy, i think i might just be sticking with it at least until hardy ships a 2.6.23 ore later kernel, its font are also better than gutsys.

Yes out of curiosity.
Large download - more than 3 GB
It does not care for your other Linux automatically, you have to add them manually and write the "boot line" from their menu.lst
And Fedora (also Fedora 7) is the only distro where a wired network does not work for me. It finds eth0 but when I try to activate the connection it says "Cable not connected" which is untrue as it works with the other 7 distros in that computer.
So I skip it....

Yeah, that's veeery annoying...
And, the package manager is noticeably slow. Don't compare it to Synaptic or you're in for a bad surprise... :(

Hi

I have tried Fedora 5, 6,7, and 8. In all cases I have no mouse pointer after splash screen on two computers on a fairly standard setup.

This has been a known problem since Fedora 4, on Ferdora 8 the updates removed my sound and network

Been using Linux for 10 years and have always found Fedora one of the most dissapointing, and in my opinion, overrated Distros

I tested out Fedora 8 on my system and it worked perfectly. The system was fast and stable. I prefer LinuxMint but Fedora 8 is very good.

My two cents.

Dear All
I would agrree that fedora is slighlty over rated, but this is there best release so far.

Yum the package manger is now the fastest it has ever been though:-)

Artwork quite poor compared to version 7.

I am a very happy Fedora user ! (FC3, FC5, FC6, F7 and F8...)

Fedora has always been the very best for my DESKTOP (I don't have to deal with wireless, it's not a laptop...)

It is IMO rather simple to setup: once install, I add the Livna repos (also the Adobe Flash & Skype repos), then I just download and install what I need.

I am a Gnome user (occasionally Fluxbox)

That said, I usually don't set Fedora on laptops, because of the wifi issue... For laptops, any *Buntu based system is usually better (I run Xubuntu Dapper on my very old laptop...)

I usually use a mix of Fedora, Debian, Mandriva & *Buntu... on my various boxes...

I erased my F8 partition a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday I wanted to reinstall it, to give it another try... Man, I lost an entire afternoon NOT getting it properly installed in the same PC and with the same DVD I previously used :(
In the end, I wasn't able to do a single upgrade because Pup stalled everytime for a loooooooooong time. Since you cannot use Yum when Pup is working (or NOT working), I could not install anything else, including the nVidia drivers that I need in every Linux distro (otherwise my screen is shifted to the right, cutting one of its sides, and monitor frequency is a mess).
:(
