But yes, I'm having no issue with the kernel 3 and Intel now

You see, now that is interesting. If an Intel driver can be inserted by the present dkms.conf file then that says to me that there isn't that much wrong with it and maybe it is the nvidia driver that is at fault here not the dkms conf file (the lesson here is treat all computer error messages with a pinch of salt). But that is only a guess, I really don't know for sure. If it is a problem with the Nvidia driver it may take longer to get fixed, maybe I should do a manual install of the latest Nvidia driver onto this kernel and see what happens.

I'll think about it.

I'm not currently running LMDE with the repo pointing to debian testing but I know for a fact that the Intel video driver is built into (part of) the kernel itself and has been so through the last several kernel (point) releases and it's not considered a proprietary driver that has to be separately installed. Yes, it has to be reconfigured in the OS for each new kernel but Nvidia has it's own separate dkms package (nvidia-kernel-dkms) that deals specifically with rebuilding/patching the Nvidia driver(s) to a new kernel.

Try this and see if it helps any. At the very least it might prove worthwhile in seeing what the results it gives.

Go to Synaptic (or use a terminal) and install or check installed:

nvidia-glx
nvidia-kernel-source
nvidia-kernel-dkms
nvidia-xconfig
nvidia-settings

After installation, run from a terminal:

Code: Select all
sudo nvidia-xconfig

It could very be that the latest kernel and Nvidia drivers are not yet compatible but it would seem this should have been tested already before releasing from Debian unstable to testing.

I'm using amd64, pointed to Mint incoming, and haven't see a kernel upgrade yet, all I've gotten is a chrome update and some lib for lame.

Thank you for clearing up my suspicions about the Intel driver - obviously I am mistaken in my assumptions there.

As regards your other suggestions, I carried all this out and was still left with a terminal login and no graphics. But at least it gave me something to try, thanks.

You will only get this update/problem with Debian Testing at the moment, Incoming is a bit behind Testing.

Same problem with 64 bit version of the new 3.0.0-1 Debian kernel
It should be noted that I had the same problem with the Liquorix 2.6.39-4 kernel upgrade.
So the problem appears to be with Nvidia dkms.

As I mentioned previously both updates to the new Debian 3.0.0-1 and Liquorix 2.6.39-4 kernel went ok when using SMXI.

I guess if not using SMXI (you should learn and use it! )
OR< wait for a patch to the Nvidia DKMS.

Thanks for that Gene, more clarification.
The problem with smxi is that most users are not going to have it installed or want to learn how to use it (I have used it in the past incidentally). Dkms should do this job automatically and if it doesn't then it needs to be fixed and quick, it is the accepted tool for the job and the one that everyone has on board and it should work. Having to use third party scripts to install basic drivers is not really acceptable. It is useful for those in a hurry, but the progress of Debian/Mint should not depend on it, this bug should have been squashed when the 3.0 kernel was in Sid.

I hear what your saying Viking.
Yes, Installing drivers easily should be something that LMDE does by default.
In the past dkms has always worked for me, BUT!! :?

When Ikey was still at Mint. I remember him working on an easy driver installation program. I think he mentioned looking at SMXI, himself. There seemed to be something about "jockey" (the ubuntu style system) that he didn't care for.
I am thinking the Clem and crew are looking at this as we speak (or TYPE, as it were)

Great! I hope you are right. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against smxi except that it is not Mint/Debian tool. If it becomes one I will certainly embrace it. Thanks again for the input - always good 'talking' to you :)

Thanks Gene. I was offered the 64 bit kernel upgrade earlier today but I didn't want to do it until I was sure that it would bork too many things. Guess I'll wait a bit until the dkms stuff is updated.

For what it's worth, I've been running 64 bit LMDE, using both Gnome and xfce, since January and I haven't run into any problems that seemed isolated to the 64 bit version. And since I have 4 GB of RAM it seems better to use a 64 bit OS than to mess around with PAE kernels.

Sure thing.

Another note on the Debian 3.0.0-1 kernel. I found it curious that Debian would offer this before Liquorix, who always seems to be ahead of the curve. Thinking maybe there was something the Liquorix folks did not like about it. I did have one "glictch' with it. My keyboard (UBS) suddenly stopped working. I unplugged/repluged it, and it was ok. Dont know if that was specific to me, the kernel, or just an accident.

I am now booting in the Liquorix kernel by default, and have not that that problem again. :?:
Might be something for others to look for.

Now that's strange. I'm running the amd64 version of LMDE pointed toward 'Incoming' and running the same Liquorix 2.6.39-4 kernel with the 275.09.07 Nvidia driver(s) and I haven't had a single problem so far. I believe that 280 is the latest though or am I mistaken in that?

Maybe a bit off topic now when i say, this thread became the most important one for me in the last month. At first it needed some
time in order to become familiar with it. But now i only need five to ten minutes a day to read with. Except on days like this
with the new kernel :)

I removed 3.0, will wait for a fix. I'm not in the hurry, to must have it today.
I believe in everything, except humans.

It should be noted that I had the same problem with the Liquorix 2.6.39-4 kernel upgrade.
So the problem appears to be with Nvidia dkms.

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''.

Now that's strange. I'm running the amd64 version of LMDE pointed toward 'Incoming' and running the same Liquorix 2.6.39-4 kernel with the 275.09.07 Nvidia driver(s) and I haven't had a single problem so far. I installed the latest 'debian testing' Nvidia driver using the procedure I mentioned a comment or two back when I did a fresh load of LMDE 2 months ago and it's been updating fine so far.

KMB

I may have jumped the gun on that one. So much "fiddling" the last day or two.
I may have had the Nvidia 280.13 driver installed, I know I do now.
Must have gotten it from "SID"

In any event it was the Liquorix 2.6.39-4 (64bit) kernel, and Nvidia did crash it. :?:

EDIT:

Hey "ZZ"

Didnt see your post.. :)

I did see a bug report on the Nvidia-kernel-dkms that had been filed, and just the problem that we were discussing.
I guess its been fixed?
That was quick.. Good for them. :P

Thanks for that.

Last night (Tuesday morning), I upgraded to the new kernel 3-pae on my laptop and the recompile set my Intel graphics driver straight. But then we heard from the folks using the non-free nVidia drivers, and all hell broke loose for them. Later on Tuesday morning, I upgraded my desktop that has an nVidia card. But I'm not using the nVidia driver. I'm using the nouveau driver. It doesn't look like nouveau uses DKMS. I looked in Synaptic, and then on the web. I'm pretty sure about this.

Bottom line: no kernel 3 problem with the nouveau driver:

Also, I don't think we've heard a peep out of the ATI card users - not from the proprietary fglrx driver users, or the open source driver users. So as viking777 indicated, "the problem appears to be with Nvidia dkms".

Just so that there is some input from an ATI HD4200 user: I have kept up all updates, including today's, and as far as ATI graphics (Gallium, not proprietary driver), my video seems to be working better than ever. No update problems nor broken packages.

Lucky man zerozero! But 429Mb of updates - you know why I am still tracking Testing.

Just to clear up one thing, there has been no update to nvidia-dkms that I am aware of, it is still broken on my system.

Noticed on a reinstallation, don't know what to do about it though. (except wait for somebody to rewrite dkms.conf).

dkms.conf file is missing here too, no problems though.
