You see, now that is interesting. If an Intel driver can be inserted by the present dkms.conf file then that says to me that there isn't that much wrong with it and maybe it is the nvidia driver that is at fault here not the dkms conf file (the lesson here is treat all computer error messages with a pinch of salt). But that is only a guess, I really don't know for sure. If it is a problem with the Nvidia driver it may take longer to get fixed, maybe I should do a manual install of the latest Nvidia driver onto this kernel and see what happens.
I'll think about it.
I'm not currently running LMDE with the repo pointing to debian testing but I know for a fact that the Intel video driver is built into (part of) the kernel itself and has been so through the last several kernel (point) releases and it's not considered a proprietary driver that has to be separately installed. Yes, it has to be reconfigured in the OS for each new kernel but Nvidia has it's own separate dkms package (nvidia-kernel-dkms) that deals specifically with rebuilding/patching the Nvidia driver(s) to a new kernel.
Try this and see if it helps any. At the very least it might prove worthwhile in seeing what the results it gives.
Go to Synaptic (or use a terminal) and install or check installed:
nvidia-glx
nvidia-kernel-source
nvidia-kernel-dkms
nvidia-xconfig
nvidia-settings
After installation, run from a terminal:
- Code: Select all
sudo nvidia-xconfig
It could very be that the latest kernel and Nvidia drivers are not yet compatible but it would seem this should have been tested already before releasing from Debian unstable to testing.
Thanks for that.
Last night (Tuesday morning), I upgraded to the new kernel 3-pae on my laptop and the recompile set my Intel graphics driver straight. But then we heard from the folks using the non-free nVidia drivers, and all hell broke loose for them. Later on Tuesday morning, I upgraded my desktop that has an nVidia card. But I'm not using the nVidia driver. I'm using the nouveau driver. It doesn't look like nouveau uses DKMS. I looked in Synaptic, and then on the web. I'm pretty sure about this.
Bottom line: no kernel 3 problem with the nouveau driver:

Also, I don't think we've heard a peep out of the ATI card users - not from the proprietary fglrx driver users, or the open source driver users. So as viking777 indicated, "the problem appears to be with Nvidia dkms".
