No titlebar or window selection buttons

Post by jacobcrogers »

I don't have the bar on top of my applications that has the name of the app and the minimize/maximize buttons. Also my opened windows aren't showing up in the window selection area. Also "show desktop" isn't working. I tried updating and restarting a few times but that hasn't worked.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Does it come back if you disable Compiz ? . . and what version of Mint Xfce ?

Did you install any apps? prior to your problem, I just experienced the same thing on a new basic install of xfce on Debian Stable(not mint) and today I will restore the image backup of the virgin install and start installing the apps again but more carefully to isolate the app that does it.

On an updated xfce mint install i went to customize a new panel and the customize option was missing from the right click menu so i'm unable to position my panels anymore.

Same thing has happened to me twice. The .cache folder was corrupted. Here's what to do. Open your home folder. Under "View", select "Show Hidden". Now all you have to do is rename .cache to something like .cachebak and reboot. The system will create a new .cache. In my case, the only settings I had to reset was my number of workspaces defaulted to 4 (I usually have 8 ).

Is this the same Xfce bug that was discussed in this week's DistroWatch weekly?

Looks like it. The first time I saw it, I reloaded the OS! Of course, that didn't help. I should have known better. I've seen something in the .mozilla folder cause Firefox problems a couple of times before (with another distro).

This applies to Compiz on Gnome, but may also apply to Xfce.

To fix no titlebar or window selection buttons, change the decorator:
1. Start CompizConfig Settings Manager
2. Open the Window Decoration configuration there
3. Change the Command to read:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/compiz-decorator
That will fix on next login. For immediate fix, run:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/compiz-decorator --replace &

If you are not running Compiz you may need to start xfwm and make sure it is started in your session autostart.

beale's solution worked for me. I do not have Compiz, but I am using xfce.

Same thing as described by OP happened to me today - fortunately, beale's solution (getting rid of .cache folder) did the trick. LMDE 201204 / XFCE 4.8 here - w/o Compiz or any freshly installed apps.

I also had this problem on my Mint Debian Xfce system. Additionally I could not change the focus between most of the windows. Chromium and the Main Menu items did seem to work normally. The other user on this system did not have the problem. beale's solution, removing .cache in my home dir, solved the problem for me as well.
