Desktop menu missing after installing compiz

Postby xly15 on Wed Aug 03, 2011 1:22 am

I didn't know where to put this so I decided this would be the best spot. After installing compiz on LXDE 11 RC2 the desktop right click menu no longer works. How do I get this working again?

Not a direct answer to your problem, because I don't know the answer. But I'd like to mention the following:

LXDE is meant for being lightweight and agile. Compiz is far from that. It's a resource hog. Installing Compiz in LXDE defeats the purpose of LXDE. Using Compiz in LXDE is like pulling a caravan with a Suzuki Alto....

So I'd advise you to reconsider Compiz in LXDE. Compiz is fine in a big fat desktop environment like Gnome, that's it's natural habitat.

Yeah I realized that. I do like all of it's rather flashy effects, but at the end of the day it just gets in the way. It was bugging out all over the place and it was making me angry. I think that I will just use LXDE the way it was designed.

I took the time to subscribe to Linux Mint just to say that i disagree.
I'v been using Linux (and X11 on other boxes) for about 20 years.
After my upgrade to Fedora 15 I figured that most desktops were too heavy and too inefficient for me.
I really like and got used to some Compiz-Fusion features with the time, and using it with the recent *environments* like gnome is really too cumbersome.
So I finally decided to give up and move to something lightweight and fast, thus LXDE.
But then, my well tailored AWN looked really ugly and missing "the cube", well I started compiz with LXDE.
Surprise! it's really fast, everything just run very cool. (Perhaps because I do have a decent graphic card?), it's way way better than with any other gnome, kde, etc.

Apropos the missing menus, i figured out that if you use: pcmanfm --desktop-pref
and UNSET the "Show menus provided etc..." under the "Advanced" tab, you get a desktop related menu, which is not an applications menu, but still better than nothing.

My system is so messed-up (upgrade on upgrade since FC2 with some pref files still from the *redhat 4* days, (not the redhat server, the redhat distor))
that I couldnt figure out how to configure lxde as I have many *configurations* in my apps menu.
So a few hints to spare some time to others (maybe it's just for the FC guys ?):
try:
lxappearance
lxinput
lxsession-edit
lxtask (cool top like)

Good luck and thanks to the LXDE developpers
