Panel App Launch Bar

Postby toomanyquestions on Thu Aug 11, 2011 3:28 pm

I just installed the newest version of Firefox on my Mint LXDE 10 (5.01); sadly I'm not sure how to make the panel app laucher point to the newest firefox version. How is this done?

I'm also getting the following message when I click what used to be the firefox panel button --- XML Parsing Error: undefined entity Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
Line Number 31, Column 1:<window id="main-window"^--- Could someone translate?

Second question answered first, for some reason your Firefox Panel button is pointed at a missing Chromium.
To fix both questions, right click the Firefox Panel button (Launcher) and under Preferences click on Command which should take you to /usr/bin/ Find the proper Firefox applet and click Open then Okay. Now click on your Panel button and see if it opens Firefox.

The lxde panel doesn't offer a "Preferences" option; worse still, I don't have the option of creating my own custom launcher. On the brightside, I did find the FF applet & it started... Any additional ideas?

Can you right click on the panel and find Add New Items? Might add a Launcher there and then get into it's Preferences to create one.

When I right-click on an empty application launcher, but again no "preferences." I do have the ability to click on settings, but that option only enables me to add app short-cuts to the launcher.

Then try adding the shortcut for Firefox.

Ah, but therein lies the problem: the shortcut points to the older version of Fire Fox....that's why I'm trying to find the file that "sets" the target (/blah/blah/blah/firefox) for the app launchers. This was easy in Xfce, not so much in LXDE.

Did you install the version of Firefox directly from Mozilla? If so, it doesn't include a .desktop file which is necessary for adding launchers to lxpanel. You can always make your own .desktop file of you care to.

There is a nice GUI Main Menu Editor at http://sourceforge.net/projects/lxmed. It also contains a nice edit tool for .desktop files.

Personally I don't like application launcher icons in the Panel bar. Keep the bar clear as much as possible for Window Selector buttons , as with multi-tasking I often have five or ten windows running , for copy and paste processes.
With LX from the Menu application sub-menu you can create a desktop launcher complete with its name. Easier than trying to remember the shape of dozens of icon launchers.

Thanks for all the great input. I eventually installed IceCat & that allowed me to short circuit my lack of knowledge (and motivation:).
