Also, has anyone upgraded gedit to version 3.0.6-2? It has a serious bug listed which seems to be based on gedit's plugin system being overhauled and making that transition from Sid to Testing a smooth one. I can't make heads or tails of if the bug affects functionality or not, so I've been hesitant to upgrade.

Yes, I saw that bug, but since I do not mind if gedit is not working ( I can always use other editor) so I went ahead to DU just to test kernel 3
Code: Select all
root@debian:/home/wayne# uname -r
3.0.0-1-amd64

Now I have gedit version 3.0.6-2, actually it is still working!
but just give me this error,
Code: Select all
root@debian:/home/wayne# gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

(gedit:2620): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported

Anyway I just ignore it.

By the way, vlc had some issue on version 1.1.11
all the 1's..

rmvb file did not play,
flv,mp3,mp4.mkv,avi file playing are OK.
there was a bug report on vlc 1.1.11

Quick note for anyone that is going to run the 3 kernel & uses Nvidia drivers from Debian (not sgfxi)---there is a makefile problem in the kernel headers that needs to be patched to allow a clean build....as root cd to /usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0-1 (your arch) & apply the patch....

Been dealing with this one for a while, I hope someone here can offer some advice.

Any idea why Samba and Winbind are no longer playing nice with each other? Upgrading one will lead to the removal of the other, so I just leave both in their current version where they peacefully coexist.

Hi Folks!

I'd been away from SID for several months.
I just upgraded a new LMDE "Testing" install to SID (I missed the fun)

Reading the posts. I held back

ifupdown
gedit
(are these still broke?)

---------------------------------------------------

All went well (ALMOST well)

Everything seems to work fine,
BUT,
I lost my (maximize/minimize/close) controls.

======================================

EDIT:

OK. I found the posts a few pages back on the issue.. :)
I had skimmed over it and not seen it.

Problems with Compiz.
I don't understand, as its the same version on Compiz (0.8.4-4) that's in "Testing", and my testing install works?
Any NEW fixes for Compiz?

OR,
I guess I will use metacity, or try to get emerald working.

Heck, getting emerald working will be a good learning experience for this new Linux guy...

-----------------

EDIT 2

Got Emerald (64bit) installed.
Now gotta play with it.

Had not run upgrade for a while.
Now back to Debian Sid-gnome.

I remove from hold the two packages below:
echo ifupdown install|dpkg --set-selections
echo gedit install|dpkg --set-selections

went ahead with DU, evolution had bug, I hold it even I do not use evolution.
upon completion, reboot and test, all is well.

Yes, all is going real smoothly with SID.
There are a whole bunch of xserver-xorg packages about to be realeased, that may cause problems.

Has anyone seen a problem with the new sudo package? I updated & then could not use chroot, so I went back to the old sudo again to be able to chroot......

Could you guys check & see if it's just my installs or?

Hey autocrosser!

Not just you.
I found a fix at the AntiX forums.
(A thank you to them)!

http://antix.freeforums.org/25-august-s ... t3307.html

25 aug. Sudo Issues

An upgrade today, 25 August 2011 breaks sudo if user chooses to keep own sudoers file (recommended).

Fix is easy.

Edit /etc/sudoers file to make sure these lines are near the top above user specifications.

Code:
Defaults env_reset
Defaults secure_path="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin"

WARNING

It seems the latest upgrade today, added xorg 11, which is NOT yet compatible with any Nvidia driver, for full speed and direct 3D graphics. In fact, only neove-0hh-ooh, (or whatever it's called) is the only thing, that gives a GUI, at all! No debian-nvidia, no nvidia current, no nvidia beta, no GUI.

I'm running sid, Nvida G72 card, and Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP, and the WONDERFUL, xorg 11. Yea.

ADD: Beta Nvidia worky today. :)

Thanks GeneC!!!!!

Just what the doctor ordered!!! Took 30sec each for my Sid & Experimental installs.....

Sorry to hear that NeoMint.....I have avoided any xorg updates until I verify that it will work with nVidia stuff.....

Yes, nVidia 280 has issue too.

Re: Sid - latest updates broke nvidia xserver

Just put the link here for additional info for those who might use nVidia 280.

Hey Wayne

Maybe you can explain something for me.

I use Synaptic to upgrade, and all of those packages (33 xorg) get "automatically" held back for me, with me having to do nothing on my part.
Is that just a feature of synaptic?

Oh well
I used apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

It holds for me all xorg stuff. I did not do anything!

I think in this case the repos maintainer, hold them for us in the repos.. guess only
