No wired connection, Tobsihi Satellite R830-14 Mint 11 Katya

Postby airper on Mon Aug 15, 2011 5:27 am

Hi folks,

looking for some help with Internet Connections on a new Toshiba laptop. I just can't get either the wired or wireless connections to complete and connect. Here's the basics and what I've tried far.

Toshiba Satellite R830-145
Intel HM65 chipset
Hard Drive 640Gb
Ethernet Controller is Intel 82579v
Wireless is Atheros AR9285

Try running a search for Atheros AR9285 in the minty search bar. I did .. bunch of stuff came up. One that looked interesting.

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=77447&p=450447&hilit=Atheros+AR9285#p450447

Can't really think what to suggest. May want to dig around in bios too and see what's enabled/disabled in there. Are you even sure you activated wireless networking ? The wifi ... ok sorta understandable. For a hard wired connection not to be working. Esp with hardware you'd taken pains to ensure was nix friendly ... doesn't make as much sense. You can tell by my nickname here that I am not a linux guru.

Some other stuff to consider.

viewtopic.php?f=150&t=49808
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/networ ... works.html

aka: Which connection is set to default. Would think the eth0 would be ... For you is it ? Would disable the wireless connection and focus on one problem at a time. It's hard ( for me, more like impossible to know what's going on, on your end.) Well ... can only say good luck. Wondering if you have whichever network management settings messed up here. The wireless probs ... ok, well not ok and more than likely a fix for sure. But a hard wired connection not working ? With hardware you'd specifically checked to be more nix friendly ? Doesn't sound quite right to me.

Thanks lmintnewb,

I'll take a look at these this morning and have a good read. The Network Manager settings are okay I think, I've checked them against another laptop which is working okay on the router, I'm fortunate having more than one machine which is working okay. I think it is a problem with the handshaking between the laptop and the router and whether it can interpret the WPA security properly. Both the wired and wireless look to be getting that far, but can't establish a valid IP address to communicate with.

I know WPA/WPA2 security has caused issues in the past with Atheros cards and my reasoning for progressing both is that I think the problem is related to both wired and wireless connections. I have a ethernet LAN at work (Windose environment), but it is secure so I can't log this machine into it. However, it does appear to pick up the connection (I get the double arrows in the system tray) so it looks like it's made the link, however at home on the router, it just times out.

I thought about the BIOS, but if the settings are okay for Windose I was struggling to see how they would not work for Linux?

it really is being very frustrating, I'm sure the answer is simple I just can't seem to stumble across it.

will read and then post some more.

Thanks

Hi lmintnewb,

Thanks for the links, but I've already found them before and tried them without success, I think my problem is deeper than this, something to do with the handshaking between the router and computer. I'll post some more output scripts and see if anyone can assist.

One more babbling post then gonna have to throw in the towel here.

You're confusing me, or I'm confusing me ... or both are confusing me, lol. Let's start at the beginning eh. As good a place as any me thinks.

Think remoulder said it right in this mess. Delete all things nix and start over fresh. You did or didn't try the comp out on live session before installing it ? It did or didn't at least pick up on the wired connection when you did or didn't try it in live session ? :D Don't have Mint 10 installed anymore, but could swear it specifically asks for a few things you should have before proceeding with an installation. One of those I believe is having your comp connected to the internet. W/o an internet connection ( or one that wasn't working ) wondering how you installed, or expected the install to be successful in the first place ?

What a hard wired connection has to do with WAP ( a wireless protocal ) I'm missing too. No worries, no matter what happens at least it has win7 working. So not like it's a paper weight, shrugs.

Not sure what else to post that might help with this. I just can't see anything much wrong here. Cards are recognised, drivers and load and assigned correctly, modules are listed, rfkill list is clear.

I really am stuck

Okay questions and answer

it is a fresh install no modifications Mint 11, new iso copy, 64bit version

You did or didn't try the comp out on live session before installing it ? Yes, but could not establish a wired or wireless connection, Also I've run live CD's with Mint 11, Fedora 15, Ubuntu 11.04 none would connect

It did or didn't at least pick up on the wired connection when you did or didn't try it in live session ? No not wired or wireless

Don't have Mint 10 installed anymore, but could swear it specifically asks for a few things you should have before proceeding with an installation. One of those I believe is having your comp connected to the internet. W/o an internet connection ( or one that wasn't working ) wondering how you installed, or expected the install to be successful in the first place ? I used a 3G dongle which is the only kind of connection I can get working at present

What a hard wired connection has to do with WAP ( a wireless protocal ) I'm missing too. No worries, no matter what happens at least it has win7 working. So not like it's a paper weight, shrugs. Yep I understand WAP is wireless, it's just that both wired and wireless seem to timing out in a similar fashion i.e they both don't seem to able to pick up a valid IP address from the router. I too and very surprised I cannot get a wired connection to run.

Okay guys,

I've read thru all these posts again and they are indeed a mess, thanks for persisting with me given the confusion I've created here.

So, I'll clean up the hard drive as suggested, delete all the Mint partitions and do a complete re-install. Then I will separate the two Internet connection issues, wired and wireless as two threads, posting what I know and what I've done for each. Hopefully then I will have made enough sense for someone to help.

Thanks guys, let me try this again with some order to things. I really don't want to give up on Linux, I'm not ready for Windows again quite yet.

Thanks for you patience this morning guys, I'll try and do better.
