Hi,

You can check manually to see if there are updates, in a terminal type:

apt update
apt upgrade

I see your problem: if you type in Terminal: man apt - you will see the answer to your question! Try apt-get instead.
Have a look at its manual first - man apt-get - then try apt-get update and apt-get upgrade.

I haven't found an easy way of returning to the command line after opening a manual - easiest to open a new terminal.

I'm a Newbie too. Hope this helps.
