[SOLVED] Wireless netwoork setup - recomended sites?

Postby Garvan on Sat Aug 27, 2011 6:10 am

Hi,

I could not find a good place to ask questions about wireless network setup, so I decided to start here in the hope that somebody could point me in the right direction. I think I need recommendations on web forums or tutorials where I can learn a bit more, or perhaps somebody here can offer a few hints.

I recently added a wireless router to my home, and am not convinced I have set it up correctly. First a few words about my set-up.

I have an ADSL connection, and my telephone line connects to a modem purchased from the service provender (Aztech ADSL2/2 + RTHERNET USB ROUTER). This is a Ethernet cable only modem, and it has worked flawlessly for a few years. I tweaked the settings in the browser interface to turn on firewall and NAT, but I don't think I made any other changes.

I recently purchased a PROLINK Wireless router (WNR1010 Wireless High Speed Broadband AP/Router) so I could take my netbook downstairs. The setup instructions were very basic. I connected it to the modem using an Ethernet cable, and followed a wizard that had me select 'Operation mode = gateway', 'Enable NTP Client Update', 'IP Address – I kept the desalts', and then it recommended I use PPoE for 'WLAN Access type' and enter isp information. This did not work for me, because when my netbook (UNR10.04) connected, it told me it was connected properly but my browser would not load web pages. I went back and changed this to 'DHCP Client' and then I was able to connect to the Internet with my netbook. Finally I turned on Encryption to WPA2(AES) which is supported by all my computers.

My netbook now works with the wireless, but every now and again (hours to days) it stops working, and refuses to connect. I must then go back into the web interface for the wireless and reset everything to the exact same settings they were at before. My desktop (Mint 11) is connected to the wireless modem by Ethernet cable and never gives a problem.

I think something must be wrong. Why do I need to keep resetting the wireless interface?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi! By this you mean changing 'DHCP Client' back to 'PPoE' or are there some more settings you have to revert?

No I keep it on DHCP, I do not change any settings. I just open the web interface, re-save the same settings, and it can connect again.

I guess that using two routers and having both of them acting as a DHCP server is the cause. The solution is to use the new router as a wireless access point.

Thanks everybody for the help. It's morning here, and I have started studying mads suggestions first. I will keep reading and testing during the day.

I added [SOLVED] to the title because the links provided really helped me learn more about wireless networks setup. I did not find a solution to my problem, but it is now happening less frequently - once every few days, and I have learned that I can simple use the power switch on the modem to turn-it-off-and-on-again to get the wireless to reconnect. Fast and convent. I may eventually understand what I did wrong in the setup, but it is no longer a big issue.

Thanks for the help.
