Youtube videos don't maximize properly

Postby vinyl_key on Sat Aug 27, 2011 9:24 pm

Hey all, I have this problem with youtube that I've never been able to figure out -- youtube videos never scale to fullscreen when maximized, they are just displayed at their native resolution with black around them. i am running Mint 11, using FF version 6. I've tried disabling the Flash hardware acceleration to no avail. Other flash players seem unaffected, as Google Video and Hulu both scale perfectly fine to fullscreen. Included are a screenshot of what it looks like & some system info. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

I get the same thing. Though for some reason most other flash video players like Megavideo maximize just fine.

In a strange turn of events, Youtube videos that are embedded into webpages maximize properly as well. The problem seems to be solely with Youtube videos on Youtube's own page

Have you tried using UMPlayer http://umplayer.com to watch YouTube videos instead? I find it's by far the best way to use YouTube. It's a new version of the deprecated SMPlayer, I've never had issues with it showing full screen or maximized.

Silly question,

Have you tried to install the add-on "Flash Aid"? I have always found this is the most reliable way to get web-embedded flash to work correctly under any ubuntu system.

I'm using FlashVideoReplacer as a temporary work-around for now; it works, but I'd prefer an actual solution is all

As I suggested, try to install "Flash Aid" from the Firefox add-ons. It resolves 99% of flash-based issues in a Firefox / Ubuntu environment.

Alternatively, try viewing videos on YouTube wth HTML5 - http://www.youtube.com/html5

Tried Flash Aid, didn't work, and actually caused a few more problems...

@ Mads,

I'm not sure exactly what your problem is with my post? Is it the suggestion to use Flash Aid (which is frequently recommended as the first port of call for flash issues within FireFox), or the fact that I started the post by asking the OP whether he had tried it, rather than just telling him to do so? Having recieved an answer that he has tried Flash Aid and it made things worse then I would attempt to help him by other means as it must be a problem with Firefox and his setup. If you feel like 'reporting' me for that post then feel free and let's see what the admins think about it. :D

@ vinyl_key,

Sorry that Flash Aid caused problems - that surprises me. To try and work out what may be causing the problems;-
Is this just on YouTube, or do other flash video sites suffer the same?
Have you tried to view the same videos through the HTML5 portal I listed?
Is the same issue seen if you install another browser, such as Chrome?

Also, what problems did Flash Aid cause? You should be able to remove it from the FireFox add-ons and reinstall the original flash plug-in from Synaptic without any problems.

Paul have you tried Google Chrome to see if the problem still persist if not then a reinstall of firefox may help also.

I'd agree with SimonTS, I have no idea what Mads has been smoking either, but feel free to report me as well. I'd love to see the reason. I didn't wanna potentially derail the thread by replying before.

Chrome does the same thing with Youtube videos. It's just Youtube that seems to have trouble with maximizing properly, but some other flash players just crash the adobe plugin altogether. Youtube videos with HTML5 do the same thing
