mint hangs when video formats are played

I have installed mint 10 on my laptop-DELL...........When I installed it , VLC media player was installed along with it. It runs fine for mp3 files but the my laptop gets player gets hanged when I run any video file............Please help

What type of video formats are being played? Have you tried any other video players?

I hv tried mp4,avi,flv formats and tried vlc,mplayer,gnome player..............all hv the same problem
