craig10x,

You sound like a small child whittering on about your "suggestion", get over it, they did not want anything to do with it, such is life.

When in their house it is not very hard to follow their rules, just seems polite.

I am waiting for the 64 bit version to come out.

Last word, over and out.

Best regards Keith

Keith...i know you are a regular over there and a pclinuxos "fanboy" so i would expect you to take a "shot" at me like that...
No, it's not that they wouldn't consider the suggestion it's that just merely MAKING the suggestion was enough to set them off...
I think it's time someone like you from that forum addressed it with them that perhaps that should re-examine their attitudes and how they treat people over there that don't constantly "sing the praises" of PcLinuxOs...

Of course, if you did, you would probably have your post deleted and you would be banned from the forum

craig10x,

I do not know where you get your information that I am a regular over there and a fanboy. I suggest that you check your facts before making such misleading statements. I have not contributed on their forums for years as I have been using Mint during that time, and the reason I have not been back is simply that they did not have a 64 bit version (and still do not) which I needed for "protein folding", so I had no need to contribute to their forums.

keep taking the tablets Keith

sorry about that...your "handle' sounded like someone i use to see over there a lot....I haven't been back there in some time, either...Nor would i care to...as i said...
i don't like their attitude over there which is quite different then anything i have encountered on any other linux distro forum...and i mean different in a bad way...
Actually, i don't think the distro is as great as they hype it to be...it probably gets breakages just like lmde and it doesn't have that smooth or polished a look as compared to say Mint, or Kubuntu for example...I toyed with installing it at one time, but after seeing how they act over there, got totally turned off to it...

firstly ... when it comes to rules ... looks what sits directly above the reply box ...

'Forum rules
Please do not post support questions here '

ironic there are forum rules here too ... shall i flaunt those????

Hi everyone ...

some may .. and some may not know me ... if you do then you will be familiar with my thoughts ...

firstly i think mint is probably the second best distro i have ever used ... it's clean and fast ... i like that ... but has way too much breakages on my quad core phenom so it sits in a little VM ... and behaves itself ...

this is a very interesting thread ... seems that the Fanboys on this forum are virilant ... good to see the calming influence of exploder though ... who by the way had the run in with me on the PCLOS forum ... over pre-release themes ... we sorted that out ... and have been cosha ever since ... he is a great guy and the mint community should be proud that he shares the same sentiments about mint with other communities as he does about PCLOS ... and he should be commended for that ...

lets move on swiftly tho ... to why i am really saying hello ... this is meant for craig and not the mint community

craig ... your problem is that you wanted something added that wasnt asked in the correct manner ... you demanded of the OS Creator that he add it coz you demanded it ... considering your age having been to college/uni in the 60's i would have expected a much more grown up attitude ... as for the piece of coding you wanted adding ... it doesnt benefit the whole to have such a minor thing added ... just to see a bit sharper font ... i dont need to thankyou ... but i might suggest glasses to help you focus ... rather than software ... as that might help in the outside world ... wouldnt want you putting diesel in your petrol car now aye ... and this is why you acted like you did ... because for once someone said no to your tantrums ... so you slate the community who by the way have helped you in your requests ... you only have to go to the forum and read your comments ...

heres just 1

"Thanks guys Cheesy
As i've said..what a great group you have here...ok...well thanks for pointing me in the right direction...I will be doing the updates...now that i know how...I'll probably add that automatic notifier too...would seem like a handy feature to have...I'll keep you all posted about my progress...should be a lot of fun...

I was very impressed from what i saw on the live cd...they have done a terrific job on the gnome version of 2010...."

Link to message

it's nice to see the positive out of this though ... other mint users trying PCLOS ... and appreciating it for what it is ... just as those at PCLOS appreciate Mint for what it is ... it doesnt mean were all fanboys and nuts ... we just like different things ... people like craig are the reason why new people get turned off a distro ... and yes we have those people at PCLOS ...

The Distribution discussion was removed for these exact threads ... mud slinging ... when all we go to the forum for it to help or be helped by others ... thats what they are there for ... if you dont like a forum ... dont go there ...

as you can see i havent asked for help yet so i am obeying your forum rules ... please have the courtesy to obey ours ...

have a nice day

Kori...i didn't demand anything i simply suggested it and it WOULD improve the look of the web surfing quite a bit if they would use it...and you don't have to be my age to realize how much nicer ubuntu looks in web surfing then pclinuxos does...and of course that includes all ubuntu based distros and LMDE because Clem had the good sense to add the patching when he got feedback from LMDE users that the font rendering in debian doesn't look as good as main edition mint because they don't use the patches...Clem is the "creator" of MINT and he didn't feel "insulted" that we made the suggestion as apparently your beloved leader Texstar does...

What can i say...no point in going on with this discussion any further but your sharp remarks against me and attempts to put me down i think highlight the bad attitude one will find in that forum, which you will not find here or in most linux distro forums in my experience...I think you made MY POINT better then even i could...

Oh and regarding your cute "glasses" comment...well a few months ago, my friend, i had cataract surgery and while i USE to wear glasses and was pretty nearsighted...thanks to my new IOL lenses i can see my computer (and everything else) 20/20.... 8)
And ubuntu based distros (or ubuntu patched ditros such as LMDE) STILL look better to me then PcLinuxOs

Re: PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 is now available for download

Postby Hootiegibbon on Wed Aug 31, 2011 5:27 pm

First of all let me introduce myself

My nick is Hootiegibbon and I have been a long standing member of the community over at PCLinuxOS since first using PCLinuxOS back when it was p0.92, I have since then been fortunate enough to have been invited to become a moderator there, and yes I am very biased toward the distribution and fee that It is among the best if not the best (ymmv) .

We are at a developer and moderator level much smaller than most of the other Distro's, we do not have huge resources or numbers of moderators/developers as a result the forum rules have to be a little more exacting and definite, this lets everybody know where they stand.

one of the reasons that we have no distro discussion area any more is that it was taking more time to moderate that one board due to distro-bashing than it did to moderate the other boards in there entirety, the fact is that when a distro discussion board exists its normally titled "distroA vrs distroB" which just invites hostility from each camp toward the other and some where in the middle some one will say "well actually distroC is..."

as for using patches from other distros (you name just one), theer are several reasons why some patches are used and some not, PCLinuxOS is quite unlike the other distros you have mentioned in many ways, one of the reasons for the no-Distro-Bashing rules is that Texstar and the other developers use a wide range of various patches from various sources -

PCLinuxOS was built from the ground up using the packages in our repository.  The packages in our repo may be original creations but may also contain repackaged and modified packages from Fedora, OpenSuse and Mandriva released under the GPL. PCLinuxOS packages may also contain patches from Ubuntu, Debian, PLD and Charka. The PCLinuxOS team would like to thank these distributions who may have indirectly contributed to the PCLinuxOS distribution.

The PCLinuxOS name is Copyrighted 2003 and Trademarked through the Linux Mark Institute. All rights reserved. Linux is trademarked by Linus Torvalds.

So using patches is not a problem, and suggestions for new apps and patches have to go through the "package suggestion" sub forum, which again has its own set of 'rules' and a format to be kept to.

I would now like to thank all the forum members that we seem to share, exploder this is a very interesting thread and i hope that the above summery helps what you have been trying to explain, thanks also to longtom and sproggy and the other PCLinuxOS users here.

I also want to thank the Mint moderators and community for having what seems to be (for the most part) a good natured discussion.

Thank you Jase...for your post that explained why things are done a certain way there and also the proper channels to submit such requests to....very well handled, indeed...and i appreciate that you did not take little "jabs" at me as a few others did here...i was only trying to be helpful with my suggestion and to contribute an idea that i felt might enhance the distro...i just did not appreciate some coming down on me for it...so thanks again  :)

Would it be at all possible to have this topic closed. I'm delighted that PCLinuxOS has shipped another release of their distro. Message received thank you very much. Former members have an almost visceral attitude concerning PCLinuxOS as you can see from several posts and I see nothing constructive about continuing the acrimony.

The usual Mint way of handling this type of situation, where it's simply ignored by everyone and the topic eventually goes to forum heaven, simply isn't working with this one. Now we have PCLinixOS members joining this forum presumably just to comment on this topic which will just increase the tension.

I think it would be best for all concerned to close this topic.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

I agree with altair4 (love your name here by the way, are you a big fan of the classic sci-fi film "Forbidden Planet" ?)....

To the moderators...wouldn't it be a good idea to close the thread...as he pointed out...everyone knows and has known for quite some time that the new version of their distro is available...It now seems to be attracting many of them to come over here just to promote it...And the irony is, if one started such a thread about Linux Mint over there, it would not survive one day...My final comment to this thread...

No reason to close the thread, no rules broken. PCLinuxOS forum members are welcome here just like anyone else, besides the responses given were just fine. There are threads here about a variety of different distros and we don't close those threads, so why should we close this one.

because pclinuxos doesn't allow people to discuss other distros in their forums...where as other distros do...perhaps that is a good reason...what is fair for one is fair for the other...up to the moderators of course...but something about that doesn't seem very right does it?
don't mean to sound harsh...but some times the truth hurts a bit doesn't it?

Well, there is no need to use gdebi.
pclos is rpm based

anyway chromium browser is in the repos, you can just use synaptic, search chromium, you should see chromium-browser, click it, apply, that is it.

or open terminal, su to root

apt-get update
apt-get install chromium-browser

Ok Wayne. I didn't realize that. I looked for chromium in synaptic and didn't see it but it is very different than what I am used to which is Mint. Clem has spoiled me making things so easy.
